CBS News Bulletin: Kennedy Has Been Shot
CBS News interrupted their afternoon broadcast of As The World Turns to announce that President Kennedy had been “seriously wounded by this shooting.” Details were unclear as the news emerged. At first, programmers ran a few commercials, then tried to return to the soap opera. But it became obvious that the news was far more serious — and grave — than anybody had originally anticipated.
Confusion Ensues Over Condition of JFK
Cameras cut to the scene of a luncheon at what is now the Dallas Market Center, where attendees had awaited the president’s arrival, but were now dismayed at hearing the news of his shooting. Rumors began to swirl that Kennedy had died, but could not be confirmed at first. CBS anchor Walter Cronkite was interrupted by a colleague who told him that local station KRLD was reporting unconfirmed reports that Kennedy was in fact dead.
