Digital Short: Best Friends
Plot: A cutesy sing-song Digital Short appropriately made use of Katy Perry’s voice (as did many skits last night), but their “Two Best Friends” tune takes a turn for the worse. Starting off featuring her innocuous wintertime activities with best friend Andy Samberg, the caroling and movie-watching descend into the seedy underbelly of New York when they adopt a homeless man (Matt Damon) into their best friends crew. By the end, it’s a shock they’re not in jail and somehow manage to have dozens of “best friends,” thanks to a mad scientist they encounter.
Best Line: “We’re four best friends, who love holiday cheer, and huffing on gas fumes.”
New Year’s Eve Sequel
Plot: The new flick New Year’s Eve features so many celebrities that none is on screen for longer than 15 minutes. Garry Marshall’s film follows up his 2010 Valentine’s Day, which also featured a slew of famous faces for very short amounts of time. In keeping with tradition, SNL set up for the next round of multi-celebrity films, this one titled The Apocalypse. The trailer runs through dozens of them portrayed in the film, from A-listers Drew Barrymore and Ashton Kutcher to no-listers Casey Anthony and Lou Bega and even inanimate objects like the FOX NFL Robot. Keep an eye out for the Osama bin Laden cameo at the end.
Best Line: “Starring literally thousands of your favorite celebrities, like Al Roker and Christina Aguilera…”
