Traditional Christmas dish Kutia with grains, nuts, poppy seeds and honey
The Sviata Vechera presents a feast of 12 meatless dishes (12 dishes for the number of Jesus’ disciples) with traditional Catholic flair. The main staple of the meal revolves around Kutia, boiled wheat with poppy seeds and honey. To wash down the tradition, Ukrainians generally opt for Uzvar, a drink made from 12 different (see the theme here?) stewed fruits.

Ham with mustard.
The Joulupoyta (Christmas table) has a selection of dishes surrounding a ham, normally served with mustard and bread. Fish accompanies the ham and laatikot, a liver and raisin casserole, provides a must-have side dish, along with potatoes, rice and carrots.
