BEST: Julie Bowen
Bowen, 41, the ultra-fit Modern Family star and mother of three, went for old-school 40’s glamour and a classic gown by Reem Acra, who won the unofficial award for most-popular designer of the night.
BEST: Laura Dern
Dern, 44, collected an award for best actress in a television comedy for her starring role in Enlightenedwearing this stunning emerald sequin gown.
BEST: Madonna
Madonna, 53, returned to the winner’s podium and an age-appropriate look in this silver and forest-green gown by Reem Acra. She won best original song for "Masterpiece,” which was featured in the film W.E.
BEST: Diane Lane
Lane was nominated for best performance in a mini-series for her role as Pat Loud in Cinema Verite. The actress, 46, who seems to get more gorgeous as she ages, wore a shimmering Reem Acra dress.
BEST: Viola Davis
Davis won raves and a best actress nomination for her role as Aibileen Clark in the hit film, The Help. The 46 year-old wore this lovely Roman-looking Emilio Pucci gown with Jimmy Choo heels.
BEST: Elizabeth McGovern
McGovern, 50, has returned to the small screen as the American wife of a British lord in PBS’s Downton Abbey. She didn’t win for best actress, but the series picked up an award for best miniseries. McGovern’s simple two-toned dress was break from the elaborate Edwardian gowns she wears on the show.
BEST: Helen Mirren
Does this woman ever look bad? As a presenter, the talented (and gravity-defying) 66 year-old upstaged everyone in this plunging midnight-blue Badgley Mischka gown with ruffled skirt.
BEST: Felicity Huffman
The not-so-desperate housewife was stunning in a soft silver sheath. And the actress, 49, even sang a little tune with her husband William H. Macy as they presented an award for best TV actress.
BEST: Jodie Foster
Foster, 49, was back in movie-star mode with this glittering aqua gown which she paired with a look of patient bemusement as host Ricky Gervais launched a barrage of cringe-worthy jokes her way. The star brought her two young sons to the awards—a rarity for the reclusive Foster.
BEST: Tilda Swinton
Swinton, 51, was perhaps channeling her snow-queen character from Narnia with this ice-blue satin suit-dress by Haider Ackermann. The Oscar-winning actress was nominated for best actress in a drama for her role in the film We Need to Talk About Kevin.
WORST: Laura Linney
Linney, 47, was nominated for best actress in a TV series for her role in The Big C, wore a very purple J. Mendel dress. It was a bold choice, but the cut and the color just didn't work together.
WORST: Julianna Margulies
Margulies, 45, wore a purple, backless sheath by Naeem Khan with bright green earrings. The actress won raves and a best actress nomination for her starring role in the TV series The Good Wife Her dress however, wasn’t such a smash. It just didn’t flatter her.
WORST: Meryl Streep
Streep, 62, won a best actress award for her performance as Margaret Thatcher in the film The Iron Lady, , but her very strange black dress bombed.
WORST: Elle Macpherson
Just because you have “the body” to wear something, doesn’t mean you should. Macpherson, 47, wore a frothy, too-youthful Zac Posen corset dress which was better suited to a Victoria’s Secret runway than her role as a presenter.
WORST: Jessica Lange
Lange, 62, won best supporting actress in a television series for her role in American Horror Story. Perhaps she was taking the theme of the show a bit too far with this ill-fitting Gothic gown.
