December 27, 1987 – Considered the world’s worst peacetime sea tragedy, the ferry Doña Paz was sailing through the choppy waters of the Tablas Strait when it collided with the oil tanker Vector off the island of Mindoro. The petroleum aboard the tanker ignited a blaze that quickly spread to the ferry. More than 4,000 of Doña Paz’s passengers died, along with 11 of Vector’s 13-man crew.
