Fallen trees surround the remnants of a home in Henryville, Ind., on March 4, 2012, after a tornado devastated the area

An Indiana baby found in a field after tornadoes tore through the Midwest and South died on Sunday after being taken off life support, the Associated Press reports.

The 15-month-old was Angel Babcock of New Pekin, Ind. Friday’s storms destroyed her family’s mobile home and killed her father, mother and two siblings. After being found, Angel was taken to Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville, where her ability to open her eyes seemed to be a sign of hope amid the devastation. But the swelling in her brain didn’t go down, nursing officer Cis Gruebbel told the AP. Her condition deteriorated as her eyes no longer moved and her brain showed no signs of activity. On Saturday, Angel’s extended family decided to end life support.

“Angel has been reunited with her parents,” her grandfather Jack Brough said in a statement. “We want to thank God for all of you and for your thoughts and prayers. God will bring you and all of us out of this. This is what it will take. All should look to God.”

Angel’s death brought the number of fatalities from Friday’s storms to 39 people across five states. Earlier in the week, another series of storms killed 13 people throughout the Midwest and South. Towns across Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Alabama have been devastated.
