Marc Jacobs is one of America’s most provocative and influential designers, yet many know little about him aside from his penchant for starting his runway shows late and occasionally wearing skirts. In this week’s issue of TIME, Feifei Sun profiles the 48-year-old designer at the helm of a fashion empire.

As the artistic director of Louis Vuitton for the past fifteen years, Jacobs has deconstructed the storied French brand through his daring collections and talked-about collaborations. Somehow, he finds time to design his own namesake line in New York as well. But for Jacobs, the imperative is to live in the moment; he refuses to look back or to plan too far ahead.

Jacobs’ most recent fall/winter 2012 collection made headlines for featuring two under-16 models, but the designer is unconcerned about their inclusion. Despite being the toast of the fashion world, this rising star marches to the beat of his own drum, telling TIME, “There are very few people whose opinion about fashion matters to me.”
