UPDATE: According to doctors who examined her, Karla Vanessa Perez — who told Mexican television earlier this week she was pregnant with nine kids — isn’t even pregnant. In fact, according to Coahuila state secretary of health Jorge Luna, the 32-year-old’s original claim that she had triplets was false as well: “They have three children, but they are 4, 12, and 15 years old,” he said.
So… never mind.
The Octomom’s reign as the most unbelievable vessel of human creation is over. Meet the Nonomom.
A Mexican woman named Karla Vanessa Perez is pregnant with nine—nine—babies; six girls and three boys, the country’s main broadcaster Televisa reported on Thursday night. And she’s no stranger to multiple births, either: she had triplets less than a year ago.
Perez, who lives in the Mexican state of Coahuila along the Texas border, is currently being treated at a hospital in the state capital Saltillo.
While there hasn’t been confirmation of her age, the Televisa report said that Perez did receive fertility treatment prior to her pregnancy.
Perez told El Universal newspaper that her doctors told her she can hold out another month to ensure complete growth of the babies, Discovery reports. Perez has an internal injury from her triplets’ caesarian, but said she’s confident the birth will go well. She and her husband Bernardo are focusing on getting through a safe pregnancy and delivery before anything else. “It’s very early to think of names for the babies,” Perez told Notimex. “First I hope that everything goes well.”
If all does go well, it will be one of the highest multiple births ever recorded, Reuters reports. In 2009, 36-year-old Nadya Suleman captured the world’s attention when she gave birth to eight babies after being implanted with 12 embryos, earning the media moniker “Octomom.” However, her obsession with fertility, as well as her reported plastic surgery and attempts at shopping around a reality show, drew significant criticism. Earlier this week California state social workers were called to Suleman’s home following reports that her children were living in squalor, but after spending more than an hour with the family reported no cause for action.
Here’s hoping the “Nonomom” has a safe delivery and an uneventful motherhood.
