The silks of the Kentucky Derby hang in the locker room prior to race time.
Hats, horses and infield ruffians notwithstanding, on race day the jockeys’ uniforms — or “silks” — are the most colorful outfits at Churchill Downs. Traditionally used to delineate the owner of a horse with simple colors, the designs—and accompanying flash— have only magnified over time, offering a near endless array of colorful combinations.
