After drifting 4,500 miles, an abandoned 150-foot Japanese squid-fishing boat, the Ryou-Un Maru, was spotted bobbing like a “ghost ship” near southern Alaska in March 2012. Already forgotten about in Japan, the unregistered boat continued to drift to about 170 nautical miles southwest of Sitka, Alaska, until the U.S. Coast Guard shot it full of holes and sent it to a watery grave on April 5, 2012.
