American golfer Webb Simpson played what was likely the greatest 72 holes in his life over the past weekend to win the U.S. Open, and the Internet will remember him as That Guy Who Got Heckled by the Bird-Caller.

As the 25-year-old Simpson, trophy in hand, settled in for his post-tournament interview with Bob Costas, he was suddenly interrupted by a gleeful mystery man in a woolly Union Jack hat, who began to disrupt proceedings with his very odd bird calls.

The man was quickly escorted off the Olympic Club course in San Francisco by US Golf Association executive director, Mike Davis, but not before he had made his mark. And yet considerable credit must go to Simpson, who not only shrugged off the untimely incident with the ease of a veteran, but had the wherewithal to come up with a zinger of his own: “Enjoy the jail cell pal.” The ever unflappable Costas noted that the man “was on his way to a place other than where you’re headed.”

Talking about the incident later, Simpson said, “He just appeared in front me. I wasn’t sure if that was part of the deal.”
