Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp arrive to attend the Figaro Madame/Chanel dinner during the 63rd Cannes Film Festival on May 18, 2010 in Cannes.

It’s been rumored for months, but now it’s official: Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis have broken up.

Depp’s publicist confirmed the split on Tuesday with a brief statement: “Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis have amicably separated. Please respect their privacy and, more importantly, the privacy of their children.”

The American actor and French model and actress have been together for 14 years and have two children, Lily-Rose, 13, and Jack, 9. The announcement marks the end of a romance kindled in 1998, when Depp and Paradis met on the set of the supernatural thriller The Ninth Gate. Before that, Depp had a long string of romances, marrying and then divorcing makeup artist Lori Anne Allison, becoming engaged to actresses Jennifer Grey and Sherilyn Fenn, and proposing to 17-year-old Winona Ryder and tattooing “WINONA FOREVER” on his arm (which he famously had altered to “Wino Forever” after their breakup). He then dated model Kate Moss for four years before meeting Paradis.

For a time, Depp and Paradis led what looked like an idyllic life, shuttling between their island in the Bahamas, their villa near Saint-Tropez, France and several other homes. In 2004, Depp told OK! magazine: “You can’t plan the kind of deep love that results in children. Fatherhood was not a conscious decision but now I have become the perfect example of all the paternity cliches I laughed at for years. I look forward to having more children. I’d have a hundred if Vanessa were willing.”

Paradis also seemed blissfully happy, telling Euan Ferguson of the Guardian in 2010 that she hoped in a past life, she was “absolutely horrible, evil, hideous. Because otherwise — well, hell, to even things up next time around, I’m going to have to pay for this one, am I not?”

The couple were never married, though Paradis sported a diamond “the size of the Ritz” on her ring finger as recently as last summer, according to the Guardian.

Yet rumors swirled that the couples relationship had suffered after they moved to California from France. Yet just last month, Depp denied talk of a split. “The rumors are not true,” he said. “I can’t say enough about it not being over.”

Celebrity love may seemed doomed, but in fact several Hollywood couples have outlasted the relatively lengthy Depp-Paradis partnership. Below is a list of A-list relationships that are still going strong:
