The cruise liner Costa Concordia lies aground in front of the Isola del Giglio (Giglio island) on January 23, 2012 after hitting underwater rocks on January 13.
This year’s first Friday the 13th was marked by terror and tragedy. On January 13, the luxury cruise ship Costa Concordia ran aground off Italy’s western coast, leaving 32 passengers and crew members dead. More than 4,000 were forced to evacuate the doomed vessel, which capsized around 10 p.m. local time. Six months later, the process of removing the partially-sunken ship from its wreck site has begun, but it will take an estimated 12 months to completely tow it away.
