A Norwegian man driving down a dark, rural road Wednesday night noticed a moose in his path and swerved to avoid it. What he didn’t notice, however, was the bear also standing nearby, which he ended up crashing into in his attempts to spare the moose, wildlife officials told Reuters.

The accident occurred around midnight near the town of Hanestad, about 140 miles north of Oslo. The driver escaped uninjured, though his car suffered some damage. The bear, however, has yet to be found. Svein Erik Bjorke of the local wildlife authority told Reuters that officials were still tracking the animal, whom they suspect sustained internal injuries, after finding traces of blood. The moose fled the scene unharmed.

The sparsely populated country is home to around 100,000 moose and just 150 brown bears, authorities said.
