Northumberlandia

Meet Northumberlandia, or “The Lady of the North.” The land sculpture — a reclining female figure formed out of 3 million tons of rock, clay and soil   — is the centerpiece of a public park near the town of Cramlington, just north of Newcastle.

Unveiled earlier this week by Princess Anne, Northumberlandia is more than a quarter of a mile long and is over 100 feet high, all part of a project to transform the park into “a living part of the countryside that will mature over time and change with the seasons,” as the park’s website suggests.

The monumental sculpture was designed by American-born architect Charles Jenks; according to ABC News, construction of Northumberlandia originally began in 2010 as part of a restoration for a coal mine near the site.

The project reportedly cost more than $3.75 million and will be maintained by Britain’s Land Trust charity.
