There’s something a bit bizarre about seeing such a violent, destructive force condensed into such a visually compelling two-minute clip.

This time-lapse video, shot from a waterfront vantage point in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, captures Hurricane Sandy slamming into the nation’s largest city. The video, which spans multiple days, from Oct. 29 to 30, culminates in the darkness that spread across lower Manhattan as large swaths of the borough lost power after a power substation was flooded and subsequently caught fire. For more than 650,000 in lower Manhattan, the lights have been out since the storm hit Monday.

YouTube user SMvideoChan, who created and uploaded the video, told Yahoo! News that it was shot from Williamsburg’s Northside Piers Towers, looking across the East River toward Manhattan. The bridge visible in the video is the Williamsburg Bridge.

The clip opens with a view of the glittering Manhattan skyline, soon marred by heavy winds and rains. And then, about a minute in, the city goes dark, backlit only by the lights of Brooklyn. The video ends as daylight returns and errant storm clouds continue to pass by. Of course, the video doesn’t capture the damage left behind, but it provides a sinister yet stunning view of Sandy as she tears through one of the nation’s most vibrant cities, plunges it into darkness, and then gracefully makes her exit.
