The beachfront neighborhood on the southern edge of Queens is no stranger to nature’s wrath: while New York City largely escaped the fury of Hurricane Irene last year, the Rockaways were hit with huge waves that left massive flooding. The community is sheltered from the sea by a wide expanse of sand called Rockaway Beach, the largest urban beach in the country.
