In 2003, after a stellar 15-year career that included a then-record 14 Grand Slam singles titles, tennis ace Pete Sampras decided it was time to retire. In honor of his momentous career, the United States Tennis Association held an on-court ceremony at the U.S. Open that August. “The process is now over. I’m 100 percent retired,” Sampras said, fighting back the tears. “I’m at peace with it. It’s time to call it a career.” He proceeded to break down and weep into his suit, belying the steady and collected demeanor that helped him see off countless opponents. Writing about the event years later, one of Britain’s less generous tabloids said “Mr. Cool turned into Mr. Drool.”
