On July 23, 2006, Tiger Woods broke down in tears immediately after winning the 2006 British Open. It was just two months since his father Earl had passed away from cancer, causing Woods to take a nine-week break from golf to deal with his bereavement. As he was coming to his final putt, his caddy Steve Williams told Woods, “this one is for dad.” Upon winning, Woods embraced Williams, as well as his then-wife Erin Nordgren and coach Hank Haney. He later said, “all these emotions just poured out of me. They have been locked in there. I just miss my dad so much. I wish he could have been here to witness this.”
