This episode’s monologue took quite a 180 from last week’s, which was a simple and straightforward standup set from host Louis C.K. In fact, almost everything about Hathaway’s extreme perkiness (which, if we’re going to be honest, teetered dangerously on the precipice of irritating) counteracted C.K.’s laid-back, indifferent demeanor of last week. Overall, though, Hathaway’s enthusiasm was refreshing, because she really committed. The monologue drew from her role in the upcoming film version of Les Misérables, bringing SNL‘s entire cast on stage for a parody number about Sunday — the crew’s only day off. Jason Sudeikis really steered this sketch, though, with his pseudo-Broadway pomp and his very puffy sleeves.
