Paula Broadwell, author of the David Petraeus biography "All In," poses for photos in Charlotte, N.C.

As the tawdry — but still hazy — details surrounding David Petraeus’ alleged affair continue to leak, there’s a key figure in the scandal who, so far, has remained silent: Paula Broadwell. She’s the author and former Army reservist whose alleged adulterous relationship with Petraeus prompted the CIA director’s resignation Friday. Broadwell recently co-authored a biography of the four-star general, titled All In: The Education of General David Petraeus, initially published in January 2012. But until last week, her name remained relatively unknown. Now, following the rapid-fire media response to the unfurling scandal, a portrait is developing of a highly educated political insider who carved her own path to Washington.

Quotes by Broadwell:

“I never felt threatened as a Westerner, nor did I feel that out of place as a female journalist. As you know, many female journalists have covered Afghanistan over the years, and a significant number of women serve in the military … so I wasn’t that much of an anomaly.” — Discussing her time embedded with Petraeus in Afghanistan (The Bismarck Tribune, January 2012)

“My background is the military, and I went to the military academy also, so I had a sort of natural network there to worth with.” — Explaining the access she had to Petraeus and to covert information, in an appearance promoting All In (The Daily Show, January 2012)

Quotes About Broadwell:

“Here she has two young kids, a husband who’s a doctor, and yet … she’s writing a book of this magnitude and hardly breaking a sweat.” — Vernon Loeb, co-author of All In (The Charlotte Observer, January 2012)

“I would say the real controversy here is: Is he awesome, or incredibly awesome?” — Jon Stewart, summing up All In (The Daily Show, January 2012)

“Obviously she has made a mistake, but I really do believe she is probably better equipped than about anybody I know to figure her way out of this in a really positive way, without destroying anybody. That’s just not her nature.” — Sarah Curme, Broadwell’s neighbor and friend (The New York Times, November 2012)

“She was relentlessly pro-Petraeus. There was no room for a conversation of shortcomings of the Petraeus theology.” — An Afghan-policy expert who met Broadwell in Kabul (The Washington Post, November 2012)

Iqbal was of the opinion that poetry should be translated into another language only in prose. This, I suppose, is the most sensible suggestion. In reading poetry, one feels before one understands. For example:It is so deeply moving in Urdu. But when I translated it for an Arab and, later, for a Frenchman, it left them cold. There is just no way of carrying the feeling from one language to another. Iqbal is right. Only the literal meaning can be transited and so the best vehicle would be prose. It is said that Edward FitzGerald is an exception to this general belief; that he has actually transposed Omar Khayyam into English, e.g.has been rendered into English as:“Think, in this batter’dCaravanserai,Whose Portals are alternate Night and Day,How Sultan after Sultanwith his Pomp,Abode his destin’d Hourand went his way.”It is an approximate rendering. And the lines are alien to English and yet not authentically Persian. In English, the form is exotic, like the lines written by Pushkin and Lermontov in the style of Saadi. The Iranian Scholar, Dr Mohammad Ali Faroghi, says about quatrains attributed to Khayyam, that he was a man of mathematics, specially Algebra, and that was a matter of pride for him. There is no proof that the quatrains circulating in his name are his work. Even if they are, these must be products of light moments not at all meant to be published. Actually, they were not published in his lifetime.Faroghi says, the truth is that Khayyam’s reputation as a poet arose not in Iran, but with the Europeans and Americans, who ignored his serious works in science.Authentic Persian poetry is deep and moving, like:This is not frivolity. The world before the nineteenth century was marked by extreme material penury in general and outright deprivation for the overwhelming majority of mankind. Here Hafiz asks the fellow-humans to enjoy the blessings available to him - love of a woman, companionship of a good friend etc. And yes, wine!Take a bottle and go to a pleasant place in the countryside, where the nightingale sings for you.“Mais la nature est là qui t’invite et qui t’aime;Plonge-toi dans son sein qu’elle t’ouvre toujours.”(Alphonse de Lamartine)(But the nature is there which invites you and loves you; plunge into her bosom which she always opens for you.)The writer is a retired ambassador.Email: abul_f@hotmail.com

ISLAMABAD - A petition filed in Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday challenged the ‘political’ nature of a recent speech made by Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani. The petition, filed in the IHC by Col (retd) Inam Rahim, argued that Gen Kayani had exceeded his professional authority by issuing a political statement. The petitioner contended that it was not the job of the military chief to issue political statements, adding Kayani had already acted in violation of the Army Act by taking an extension on his term as the military chief.Gen Kayani’s recent statement created ripples in political, legal and civil society circles and several observers believe that his statement carried veiled challenges to the superior judiciary and the media. In his address to a group of officers at the GHQ on November 5, General Kayani had stated that any efforts to create a divide between the people and the armed forces undermined the country’s greater national interests.General Kayani had observed: “All systems in Pakistan appear to be in a haste to achieve something, which can have both positive and negative implications. Let us take a pause and examine the two fundamental questions. One, are we promoting the rule of law and the Constitution? Two, are we strengthening or weakening the institutions? In the ultimate analysis, all of us would have served Pakistan better if history and our future generations judge us positively.”

ISLAMABAD - President Asif Ali Zardari on Monday signed Drug Regulatory Authority Bill 2012 into a law to prevent the sale of fake, sub-standard and non-registered medicines and to stop hoarding by creating an autonomous Drug Regulatory Authority holding the key to regulate the manufacture, storage, distribution, import and sale and advertisement of drugs. The law signed on Monday aims at ensuring the availability of safe and quality medical services at affordable prices to the people and would protect the interests of the people as well as that of the pharma industry in the country. The Bill was signed during a special ceremony held at Aiwan-e-Sadr which was attended among others by Minister for National Regulations and Services Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan, members of the Federal Cabinet, Parliamentarians, representatives of the pharmaceutical companies and others.Addressing the gathering after signing of the Bill, the President congratulated the Parliament and all political parties stating that the unanimous adoption of the Drug Regulatory Authority Bill was a sign of wisdom and maturity of the Parliament and all political parties. He said that all the Provincial Assemblies and governments deserve to be commended for agreeing to permit the Federation make this important legislation for the benefit of all. It is a measure of their political maturity, the President said in his speech.Spokesperson to the President Senator Farhatullah Babar said that the President expressed satisfaction that the conscious and the deliberate effort mounted during the past several months and involving all stakeholders had successfully culminated in the finalisation of the Drug Regulatory Authority Bill.“Perhaps for the first time all Provincial Assemblies passed resolutions urging the Federal Parliament to enact legislation on an issue that concerned all provinces and for which the provinces thought that they had not yet developed mechanisms to address the issues. The Pharmaceutical Association, the Pharma Bureau and the Pakistan Chemists and Druggists Association in addition to the Standing committees of the National Assembly and Senate were included in the broad based consultation and dialogue process to arrive at a consensus. For the first time in the history of Pakistan an autonomous drug regulatory authority has been established holding the key to regulate the manufacture, storage, distribution, import and sale and advertisement of therapeutic drugs,” Senator Farhatullah Babar said. The President further said that it goes to the credit of the Government of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto to first promulgate the Drug Act, 1976 and it goes to the credit of this coalition government to establish for the first time the Drug Regulatory Authority in the country like in advanced countries of the world. The DRA has been designed along the lines such bodies have been established in advanced countries like the US and Canada with the aim of protecting the interests of the patients, the pharma industry and officials working in the Authority. The President said that after promulgation of DRAP law, it is time to take the next step in the technology. We need to broaden our base for research and development, the President continued. He said that Biotechnology is the engine of growth of the present century. Our Pharma industry, the President said, needs to harness this technology. 'Our academia needs to work closely with the industry to ensure timely infusion of related knowledge.' He stressed that the pharma industry should now focus on acquiring international standards of quality control. It should seek to boost exports through standardization and quality assurance. He said that the label "Made in Pakistan" must be the symbol of quality and arouse confidence in the product. The President said that our new regulator DRAP needs to facilitate the Pharma Industry in promoting quality.Zardari urged for adopting corporate culture within the regulatory system. He emphasised that regulatory decisions need to be taken in a transparent manner with all stakeholders on board. He said that in view of globalisation of trade, being the double edged, we can progress only if we are better prepared for the competition. Let us pledge to make our pharma industry a truly global industry, the President said in his speech. He said that with the availability of cheap labour, necessary skills and other opportunities in the international markets, there was no reason why our pharmaceutical companies cannot distinguish themselves in the international markets. The President, on the occasion, complimented Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan and her team, especially Dr. Suhail Siddiqui, for their commitment and untiring efforts towards materialising of such an important legislation. The President also distributed awards among various Pharmaceutical companies who have achieved distinction in various pharma related fields.

Fox News smells a rat here.  Of course, even a minor fender-bender would be linked to Benghazi by the Hannity crowd.

So, here's what we need to know:

1) How deeply involved with Fast and Furious was Gen. Petraeus? How about Solydra?

2) Did Obama make him resign because adultery is a violation of Sharia law?

3) What did Petraeus know about Obama's real birthplace, and when did he know it?

4) What "stuff" did Obama offer the General to get him to resign?

5) Is that even really Gen Petraeus, or did Obama replace him with some kind of new drone that he developed in one of his FEMA-Obamacare death camps?

Explain those, "O" - if you dare...

Well he did have a brief about Bengazi, that is now - NOT going to be released. He was to appear at a review this week, but instead someone else who is taking over will be.  Even Diane Feinstein is thinking about getting a subpoena to get a hold of that report. Wanna make bets that the Obama administration never lets that see the light of day?!

Even Diane Feistrien?  You mean that "intelligence expert" who was so sure that Hussein had weapons of mass destruction that she backed the unprovoked attack of Iraq?  I wouldn't look to her for the calories in a banana, let alone real intelligence.
