ESPN’s NFL Kickoff staged an epic battle of wits during last Sunday’s broadcast. A veritable brute squad of hosts — Trey Wingo, Mark Schlereth, and Tedy Bruschi — swapped Princess Bride references (about 18 in total), solidifying the 1987 movie’s status as a cult favorite. Evidently, the twisted fairy tale book-turned-movie lent itself so well to football references that it wasn’t immediately apparent that they were joking around. The quotes and wordplay were so seamlessly incorporated into the broadcast that the untrained ear would only detect particularly sharp cleverness.

It made the preview show entertaining for even those who find football to be ultimate suffering: I’m not saying I’d like to build a summer home there, but the trees are actually quite lovely.

Sit back, relax, and enjoy watching three people who really love their job. Bonus points for catching all of the references.
