McKayla Maroney and Barack Obama are so not impressed

TIME is not impressed.

O.K., just kidding, we’re actually really impressed by this picture-perfect moment, not to mention the President’s apparent knowledge of Internet memes.

The 2012 U.S. Olympic gymnastics team stopped by the White House on Thursday for a meet and greet with President Obama. But before the team (also known as the Fierce Five) left, Obama pulled aside McKayla Maroney, who placed second on vault this summer, to discuss “the face.”

The face, of course, refers to the scrunched-up scowl the 16-year-old sported after learning she’d earned the silver medal in the individual vault final at the 2012 Olympics. The image soon went viral, spreading rapidly across the Internet and spurring a meme known as “McKayla Maroney is not impressed.”

Apparently Maroney finds the whole thing funny — and she seems to be comfortable with the attention generated from that one facial expression. In October, for example, she tweeted, “To all the people who are being me for Halloween, and sending me pictures of your “Not Impressed face”.. You.are.awesome!!!(;”

And it seems the now iconic scowl has resonated with President Obama too. “I want to talk to you one second about the face,” he told Maroney during the team’s visit. “I pretty much do that face at least once a day.”

When the gymnast heard that, she “freaked out,” she told the Associated Press. And then it happened. They stood side by side, arms crossed, lips pursed — in other words, not impressed. The White House tweeted the photo early Saturday morning and boom — it began spreading across the Internet, breathing new life into an otherwise outdated meme.

And if getting the leader of the free world to mimic a meme can’t revitalize it, we have no idea what else can.

Whoah whoah whoah . Are you telling me that Obama took ten minutes out of his day to meet with the Olympians from his own country and take photos with them? How lame! He should get back to work! That's all he should ever do. Next thing you're gonna tell me the man needs to eat and sleep, too.

Mr Obama says he 'does it at least once a day'.  I wonder what issue would cause him to do that? Is it something that has to do with National Security or could it just be more of a personal nature?  Anyway thanks to the athlet who has sparked this 'interest'!

The man needs to stop posing and do his job, the girl needs to not be "famous" for being a sore loser. Good Job America!

WWIII is starting in the MidEast, We're going over a Fiscal Cliff while the President is in Mayanmar(!), Petraeus is quizzed by Congress on letting an American Ambassador die, and Time is keeping this stupid photo-op alive?? Earth to Time -- the elections over -- you won!

Barack got it exactly right; Maroney's arms are crossed the wrong way.  Must have been the flowers.

@hydrangea Even Presidents need a break; being an Olympic champion makes you famous, not "famous"; and being disappointed with your performance doesn't make you a sore loser. But other than that, your post was quite insightful!

@PierreJacques Easy there Frenchy with the sarcasm. I'm pretty sure the first place we landed in WWII was Normandy to bail your butts out of a mess that would have otherwise had you writing that comment in German... Hope you were able to put down your Coca Cola and your iPod long enough to write that. Have a nice day.

@JacenBoyd That's the experience from being a community organizer. You come to understand Real Folks and learn how to do big things for less. It's Kool. Doesn't need big props to make it BIG. It is what it is. There's use in appearing simple when you are complex. U get a chance to get the ears of folks less fortunate. Then you can help them help themselves, once they're listen to you.

@JacenBoyd  Yeah. Didn't even have an aircraft carrier for a prop, 5,000 sailors standing around, and wasn't wearing a flight suit. Probably cost 1/10,000th of Bush's "photo op".Sheeeesh.....

Kudo... u were not wrong. Now see what u really did to the GOP. I predicated their  implosion if u can find and follow my blogs. They are somewhere all around they cyber rants. Interesting  fight and it all unraveled the cloaked GOP. Can't wait to see what will be left of them in the coming months.
