A Mayan dancer performs at the Xcaret Eco Theme Park on the outskirts of Playa del Carmen, Mexico, Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012. Amid a worldwide frenzy of advertisers and new-agers preparing for a Maya apocalypse, one group is approaching Dec. 21 with calm and equanimity, the people whose ancestors supposedly made the prediction in the first place.

Some students in Michigan will be getting an extra-long holiday break this year, thanks to the supposed end of the world.

Five Michigan school districts in Lapeer County have shuttered their doors early this holiday season, partly out of concern over end-of-the-world hysteria sparked by the Mayan Long Count calendar.

The decision, which was made Wednesday night, cancelled all classes, extracurricular activities and athletic events for Thursday and Friday this week, two days ahead of schedule. Matt Wandrie, the superintendent for Lapeer Community Schools, cited recent rumors of violence following last week’s mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., as well as “overall distractions” and “rumors connected to the Mayan calendar predicted end of the world.”

In a letter to parents and students, Wandrie, explained each rumor had been independently investigated and dismissed. However, he stood by his decision:

There have been no credible threats made against any of our students. However, these rumors have been a serious distraction for students, teachers, administrators, and parents. Therefore, given the significant disruption to the teaching and learning process, I have decided, along with my fellow superintendents of Lapeer County, to cancel school for both Thursday, December 20th, and Friday, December 21st.

Last week, in Connecticut, 20-year-old Adam Lanza took the lives of over 26 adults and children at Sandy Hook Elementary school, sparking a national debate on safety and mental health awareness. Meanwhile, the Mayan Long Count calendar is expected to move to the next b’ak’tun, or a cycle of 144,000 days, on Dec. 21st, 2012. Despite the belief that “the end” of the Mayan calendar will bring about the apocalypse, it simply means that a new cycle of the calendar will begin.

Poorly written and researched article. The schools were closed due to rumors of a student "revolt" where students would bring weapons to unspecified schools on 12/21/12. The rumors started through social networking and spread fast through the counties. Threats were investigated and no real threats were determined, but the public was worked up and scared in the Sandy Hook aftermath.

Many parents had decided to keep their kids home that day and as many as 400 students were pulled out of one high school after fellow students played a prank on their parents about a shooting in this school. Which lead to the parents calling 911 and several emergency personnel to the school. This spread across social networking sites like wild fire and sent the community into a panic. So, the district got together and decided it was best for all involved to cancel school and let everything calm down for when they return after winter break.

The only connection to the Mayan Apocalypse is that the rumored revolt was coinciding with 12/21/12. I know you can get more clicks by parading around the silly notion that schools are overreacting to a Mayan apocalypse, but it's just dishonest.

Sure this will make everyone have concerns and questions, I can't sit and worry about this. If it is our time then so be it. If we are true christains sorry about the spelling, we are right with The Lord we all should know that God will protect us from harm... I love Jesus and he will protect the true beleivers...

One thing that does seem credible;  relates to the way the full moon affects peoples emotions.  If that is true and ask any cop; what happens on weekends with full moons?  The jails fill up.    The alignment of the celestial bodies that will align may have that effect and it may have been what tipped the fellow over in the Sandy Hook school tragedy.   The proximity to the date, though not perfect, may indicate the approaching extraordinary gravitational accumulation and the effects it may have.    Notice the gun sales.

@Surfboat The spike in gun sales have absolutely nothing to with orbital mechanics or any thing of the sort. I suggest you throw on the first side of Yes "Close to the Edge" and smoke another one...

@BuzzBayless @Surfboat People who speak in absolute terms usually don't know what they are talking about so they use absolute terms to shore up their inept comments.  It is you who is Buzzed.

What a total MORON! This shows us who is leading or very inept school systems!

@gbb88 It's easy as hell to criticize. Maybe if you take an objective look at how they all reacted (yes, superintendents from every district closed separately...), you'll understand that their decision was justified. There were a billion threats at every high school in the region. What Lapeer's (I go to one of the high schools in the region) was trying to say was that people were unstable because they didn't understand nothing would happen on the 21st, that they were afraid of the worst.

Today Friday December 21st the Mayans prediction for Doomsday WILL come true, it simply cannot fail to happen!

Thousands of years ago the Mayans cultivated a series of passion plants with deadly abilities, as part of their fanatical 'gobble-gobble' worship. Since that time the Mayan plants have steadily spread, awaiting their time to strike.

Later today, all over South America those plants will open up releasing their deadly gas, which will rapidly spread over the entire earth. This gas will force millions of people to urgently seek out another person & passionately kiss them until they both expire through lack of air. Swiftly the earth will be covered with dead people: Doomsday.

Why you ask? Well the Mayans worshipped the humble turkey & this is the Mayans Christmas retribution.

Actually, schools around Battle Creek, Mi. have also canceled school for tomorrow. The stated reasons are "illness" for a couple and "threats along with the first snow, 4" to 6",  expected" for another  twenty (20) or so districts. Allegan, Michigan High School is closed for a threat to shoot up the school made before the Connecticut tragedy.

Considering that children are very gullible, it was a good decision. Some may be scared, obviously unable to concentrate on school work. Adults on the other hand, hopefully know better. :)

@JohnForsthoffer The article suggests adults don't know better. Non-existent Mayan doomsday beliefs aren't why schools are being closed, mass murders of children are. The person who wrote the article should be fired and so should their supervisor.

I have to admit it is a little crazy around here too with the holidays and all. I wonder if I could get away with foregoing all the stuff I have to do just in case the world really ends? I mean, if educators in Michigan think all the current events are too distracting to students then surely they are too distracting to me also. I need to take this up with the boss. I've got lots of holiday snacking to do before the world ends.

Does the word "caution" mean  anything to you people!  Can't wait to hear the intelligent response on this.

@KeithBrown I really don't think they really have a clue to what God has in store for us but I will say, these people better get their hearts and souls right with God and let him do what must be done.

Absolutely ludicrous that a school system should bow and close up shop in the face of superstition and fear.

I'm wondering about who the 'educator', hey gotta have a piece of papersayin so to make it into the school districts administration section, of extended studies, especially, who came up with this and political party would be nice toknow as well, but that' last is an easy bet won!!

fleethefactory5
fleethefactory5

@JimStarowicz Why does it matter at all what political party the superintendents are. Also, you do understand that there were threats at every major high school in the region. Combine that with the instability caused in crazy people because of the 21st (because they don't understand mayan heritage) and someone might do something crazy.
