Pizza Hut Singapore Introduces Double-Crust, ‘Double Sensation’ Pizza

Proof, we say, that more isn't always better when it comes to pizza.

All of the outrageous pizza creations that 2012 spawned beg an existential question: what is wrong with the classic pie? Cheese, sauce, dough. A topping or sprinkling of seasoning here or there, sure, if you feel like it. But Pizza Hut Singapore’s new Double Sensation Pizza is less “toppings” and more “frankenpizza.”

The Southeast Asian city-state has taken the term “fusion food” to a new level with this two-ringed Dante’s inferno-style behemoth. The pie consists of two concentric crusts–one stuffed with cheese sausage, the other with three-flavor cheese–and is topped with smoked chicken, turkey ham, zucchini, bell peppers, mushrooms, two sauces (Pepper Alfredo and Salsa), and the proverbial (but in this case, literal) cherry on top. Just like fruitcake and the ‘Nsync Christmas song, the pizza is only available during December.

Hungry Singaporeans are the opposite of turned off by the daring conceit. Pizza Hut invited several Singaporean bloggers to taste test the Double Sensation during a Christmas Pizza Pre-Launch Party which, according to SG Complain Queen, went swimmingly. “And they have got to be the most perfect combination ever in pizza history, in my opinion!!” she wrote.

“I love it that it is not “lumpy” and the pizza tastes as good as it looks, if not even better! I am not trying to advertise here on purpose or anything… BUT you just have to try it.”

Moral of the story: don’t judge a book by its cover (or its contents). If nothing else, her photos show that the real thing looks similar to the promotional photos, so at least there’s that. But why does it need two crusts? Don’t most people throw out the crust as it is?

The Double Sensation pizza is included in several holiday meal deals, for extra weird dining enjoyment. This year, the world was introduced to the Super Pan pizza, a hot dog-stuffed crust pizza and the Crown Crust Cheeseburger Pizza. Here’s hoping the pizza world gets back to basics in 2013.
