Two separate groups of people from the women’s-rights protest organization Code Pink stood up during Mitt Romney’s nomination acceptance speech at the 2012 Republican National Convention. Just after Romney began speaking, two people began shouting from stage left; after they were ushered out by convention security, two other Code Pink protesters stood up in the upper deck, unfurling a bright pink sign reading “People over profits!” As the protesters, which included Code Pink co-founder Medea Benjamin, began shouting their message, their chants were drowned out by the rest of the 50,000-strong crowd at the Tampa Bay Times Forum, who began a counter-chant of “USA! USA!” The organization’s appearance at the Republican confab was shocking to the delegates gathered, who wondered how they were able to obtain credentials — and such good seats, too.
