Newspaper Hires Armed Security Guards After Backlash Over Gun-Owner Map

The Journal News created this interactive map to show the names and addresses of the pistol permit holders in Westchester County.

The New York City-area newspaper that incited controversy in publishing an interactive map of gun permit holders while advocating for strict gun control laws has absorbed the backlash with a touch of irony: it reportedly hired armed security guards at its office due to thousands of angry emails and phone calls.

The Rockland County bureau of The Journal News, serving the suburbs just north of New York City, has hired a local security company, according to a police report obtained by the Rockland County Times, a local competitor newspaper. RGA Investigations security detail will be protecting The Journal News’ office through at least January 2, the newspaper reports.

A Dec. 28 police report says since the Journal News published the map, a surge of “negative correspondence” had made its employees worry for their safety and led to the decision of hiring armed security, according to the Times. The editor, Caryn A. McBride, has reportedly filed two police reports because of perceived threats, such as an email in which the writer who “wondered what McBride would get in her mail now.” Police have not taken action, saying the email “did not constitute an offense.”

The Journal News sparked outrage among gun owners and privacy advocates after publishing the interactive Google map featuring the names and addresses of local firearms owners last month — an action that critics consider an unjustifiable act of invasion of privacy. But the backlash was in the form of more than just the two emails. A state gun-rights group called for an advertising boycott and a Republican state senator has proposed legislation that would make the personal information of gun permit holders private. Even the Rockland County Times took its own swing at the paper, publishing the names and addresses of the newspaper staff. But the irony is unmistakeable in the fact that The Journal News has now retained an armed security firm.

The newspaper created the map of pistol owners in its coverage areas of Westchester and Rockland Counties (with Putnam County refusing its request) using information obtained under the Freedom of Information act, which states that public records, such as the identities of gun permit holders, are open to the public, unless restricted by statute. “People are concerned about who owns guns and how many of them there are in their neighborhoods,” said the News editor and vice president CynDee Royle a few days after the controversial map was published. “Our Freedom of Information request also sought specifics on how many and what types of weapons people owned. That portion of the request was denied.” The newspaper said it published the map, titled “Where are the gun permits in your neighborhood,” to illustrate the prevalence of gun ownership after the Dec. 14 shootings in Newtown, Conn., where 20-year-old Adam Lanza killed 27 people and later himself with two semi-automatic pistols and an assault rifle.

The map immediately drew outcry from critics, who accuse the newspaper of implying that gun owners should be shamed like sex offenders by publishing their contact information. Some pointed out that robbers could now avoid the houses of gun owners and target the ones without guns. In defense of its decision, the newspaper acknowledged that this was not the first time it published the identities of those who hold gun permits. But thanks to the article’s virality on social media sites, the reactions it received this time — more than 2,000 comments — far eclipsed a similar article it published in 2006.

The Second Amendment is sacrosanct: Those unable to understand that an individual’s sovereignty cannot be maintained without the means at hand to effect it are not yet worthy of the name American.

Holiness and righteousness extends from the Creator, Our Sovereign by Covenant and Creed, and goes person to person, family to family, neighborhood to neighborhood, city to city. Entire swathes of our prophesied Promised Land are now fiefdoms of corruption, moral swamps of Sodom and Gomorrah.

Shall states not yet under papist and Talmudic control be swayed by the transparent evils others embrace?

Only those willfully blind or consciously in service to the evil which knows the Second Amendment’s reason for existence – resistance to the tyrannical powers patently obvious in Col. Hunt’s confession to the unpunished Bush/Nixon/CIA assassination of our president which sent 58,000 of us to die shedding the blood of millions of innocents, and went on to further secure their unconstitutional money franchise by committing 9/11 – pretend to be ignorant of the anomalies present in the Aurora, Sikh Temple, and Newtown shootings.

G-d is not mocked. Truth and Justice is divine.

@NYT, do you realize why people hate to post here?  Because you scrutinize every comment and delay the posting of it.  I get so frustrated when it takes hours to post what I wish to state!   I am sure I am not alone!

I wonder if they considered domestic abuse victims who have armed themselves when they published names an addresses of law abiding citizens with intent to vilify them?

I think we should publish on the internet an interactive map listing the names, addresses and phone numbers of all the newspaper employees.  How would they like that?

The paper is anti-American: Individual sovereignty is a fraud if the individual lacks the means to protect his or her sovereignty.

Gun owners appear to be a very paranoid group of people. First they arm themselves - against what, exactly? Then they panic when they're outed by public records. Then they say the gun owners on the map will be targeted by criminals. Others say the non-gun owners on the map will be targeted. All they've got is fear, fear, and more fear.

I was right upset about the list too. It was an obvious sneak attack on law abiding people regardless of what risks they exposed them too. Now that they see themselves in danger they hire people with guns ......no, no, noooooo, let's guard them like the poor school children, take the guns away form security people they hired and give them #2 pencils....

Has The Journal News reveal the name and addresses of the security guards that they have hired? Also have they revealed the name and addresses of the police officers in the counties? If the police officers keep their weapon at home when they are off duty their names and addresses should also be revealed because just because they are police officers dose not mean that they can't use their weapon for criminal activity. It has happened before. But I will bet that even they are not that stupid.

Wow, talk about hypocrites. You people created a bad situation for all of those you enumerated! And now you hire armed guards to protect yourselves from the wrath that you have created? Welcome to the first amendment...be careful what you say as it may be stuffed down your throats, and welcome to the second amendment, which protects the first one...and excuse me, what did you print again? You liberal @@ssholes can't make up your mind what suits you at any given moment. You made yourselves a "gun free zone" by your liberalism and now are afraid that you may have awakened a homicidal maniac to come and wreak havoc upon your building. Rest assured, that it will NOT be a law abiding gun owner that does that, even though we have more reason to dislike you than those of your peers. WE ARE NOT EVIL! Those maniacs who do despicable crimes are, and the majority of them come by the guns illegally...but you have never paid attention to that! And you wish to punish us, the law abiding gun owners for what the homicidal maniacs do. How does it feel to have the shoe on the other foot, wanting protection, while all of us LAW-ABIDING gun owners already protect ourselves? Kinda makes you a believer in the 2nd amendment now doesn't it. And how do you feel about those ARMED GUARDS protecting you now? DO you think they are homicidal maniacs too? I guess they just fall outside of your thinking, because you hired them to "protect you". You "PEOPLE" really amaze me!

I rank the paper up there with WikiLeaks that loves telling on others, but can't stand the heat in the kitchen.

But it does fit with our new definition of morality -- Since our government won reelection by dividing the country along every line available, everybody else thinks they can lash out at whomever is not like them.

But yeah, let's get rid of that pesky Second Amendment that protects guns -- and also the First that protects the Press.

Emergency Please Help: Torture and Violence in Pakistan: Pain ray and Covert Energy Weapons Community stalkers gangs are openly using covert energy weapons including pain ray, mind control, idea implant and bad dreams in Tajpura Lahore, Pakistan. It has become one of the longest stubborn torture and persecution in the history of mankind. Apparently it looks that torturers are backed by government officials since torturers conduct it with complete impunity without any fear. Every night they arouse me from deep sleep by these covert electric jerk like shock rays or weapons. It is third degree torture on innocent family. Already we are living miserable poverty. Persecution is added to our lifelong deprivation, poverty and exploitation. Pakistan is such a hell for us. It is extreme violation of human rights, civil liberties, country and international laws. I request authorities to remove all these torture weapons from this civilian area or provide us accommodation at any safe place. We are in such bad crises so I request world countries and communities to provide us moral and emergency financial support or asylum. Our family cannot illegally move to any third country in order to claim asylum. We have two little children and we are decent family. There is absolutely no protection of law in Pakistan for us. It is jungle’s law here. It looks that Police is behind them or have no power on them. I have been submitting applications to Police and all institutions for last seven years but no help reach ever! Once again I get up by rays and bad dream. It is cowardly act of violence because torturers never come in front of me. I wonder why they do so. At least they should tell the reason. Every night or early in the morning they arouse me from sleep by these rays or bad dreams. I get up and Morning Prayer is taking place in the mosque opposite to my home. It is better to rescue any oppressed person than praying. Yesterday one stalker spoke when I get up by saying that Army do not let them sleep because they kill. I do not know whether he is right or not. I have nothing to do with Army. Why they torture me? Army live and get salaries on taxes we people pay. Further I cannot think of killing. I even did not fight or slapped anyone. We are living in this area for last 7 years. I did not fight with anyone. People are witness here and I have no enemy except these torturers but who are they. I have learnt by experience that no harm comes to cruel and bad people. They are very strong and possess stamina to harass 24/7. I am amazed by their stamina and strength. Often such cruel people live better lives than innocent people. Their torture is murder attempt. For a decade, I pray to God daily but could not get rid of them. Thousands of other people also prayed for me. I request good people and institutions help me in order to get rid of them. These torturers are terrorists. Arrest them or kill them. It would be God will. There are many issues on which press and media do not dare to write or speak but credit goes to internet for providing this covert information. Such institutions are above law. Feel free to speak about the corruptions of military officials, intelligence agencies employees, judges, magistrates and police. They are government officials who take salaries from exchequer grown by taxes of general people. Nothing is more important than general masses or people of the country i.e. Awam. I am innocent type of person who never harmed anyone and living in this world like an angel. I am father of two little children and I am only hope for them for their honorable life. I wrote this since world is very dangerous and filled with many criminals. Protection level in Pakistan is low for those who do not possess any good government post.I am tolerant and moderate. Pakistan is very insecure country. I feel scared here. There is little protection of life, property and honor. Let us make Pakistan safe place to live. Say no to crimes, killing, torture and blackmailing. http://news.webdesignlahore.com/pain-ray-an-hidden-energy-torture-weapon-openly-used-against-civilians-in-lahore-pakistan

Anyone that knows mapping realizes that your local County Assessors office sells more private information about you to real estate companies and oil and gas than this paper published. The fact is that through freedom of information act all govt documents are public domain. Offering gun owners special protections is unconstitutional as we will soon see. Otherwise i'll challenge all corporations for running background checks on law abiding citizens. I think these whiny gun owners need to pull up their britches and get over it. if anything it's like putting an ADT sign in your yard or beware of dog sign to let burglars know that you're packing and to stay away! I hope this map goes national as we see more stories of fire fighters and police being shot by gun owners it would be helpful if our first responders had an inventory of the weapons cache they're walking in to before serving that individual....

MEMO TO TIME MAGAZINE EDITORIAL STAFF:

GREAT JOB on stating the obvious!!  That newspaper chose to treat gun owners like sex offenders (by divulging their locations), and now that same newspaper has received substantial negative backlash.

Then, SURPRISE!  That same newspaper chooses to hire armed guards while SIMULTANEOUSLY arguing for more gun control.

I do not understand why these gun owners are so "up in arms" (pun intended - sorry!) over their information being published.  Since they proclaim to believe that gun ownership deters criminal behavior, wouldn't any would-be criminal need to know that their target is, in fact, armed?  They should be posting signs in the front yard!

JohnP
JohnP

Did you know the names and addresses of the Editors for The Journal News is also public record?  I'm sure that is at least as news worthy as publishing the names and addresses of permit holders.

I wonder how they would feel about their names and addresses being published.

Hysterical.  Those clearly publishing anti-gun views hire guns to protect them.  Hypocrites and entirely consistent with most of the anti-gun movement.

Constitution-Defender

Yeah Ms. Kock, but the majority of us do not take that route, the lawyers built their regime in order to make lots of money on frivolious lawsuits, and the people who succumb to them don't get nearly what they think they will due to the fees.  Most Americans will let those "opportunities" pass as we are normally not a vindictive people.  The ones who initiate and jump on them are the ones hoping to get rich quick and not have to work any more, which fits into the Democratic mentality, get all the handouts you can get rather than working for your living.

Constitution-Defender
Constitution-Defender

Exactly..the criminals will now know who it is that doesn't have guns and target those houses.  Why don't you just post a sign in your yard and tell everyone that you don't believe in guns, and then see what happens.  My guess, you will want one in a short amount of time.

Constitution-Defender

Yes I do on BOTH counts, but there are as many dangerous reporters out there who damage with their ir-responsible "journalism" as there are the maniacs who get and use guns illegally.  The media thinks that they can print or say whatever they want, regardless of who it may hurt, whereas the LEGAL gun owners take their responsibilities with guns more seriously and do not hurt anyone.  There is a big difference there!

Curly4
Curly4

@GIS_GUY

Those guns were not obtained legally so the gun laws would not have stopped it. But publishing the addresses where guns can be found will give those who want to steal guns a place(s) to case and break in. In addition it also give the criminals the knowledge which places that are unprotected.

Constitution-Defender
Constitution-Defender

And what about the abused women who legally got a gu to protect themselves and moved "in secret" away from their abuser, and now finds their new addresses posted on the internet...shame on you and the paper for thinking this was a "proper thing" to do

@mrbomb13

That is the same as the movie stars who are demanding more gun control and they are the greatest promoters of gun violence and mayhem in the movies they star in.

@Ron Wallace1, unfortunately, these people unveiled the addresses of many abused women who "were in hiding" to prevent them from further abuse.  What is right with that?

JohnP
JohnP

@RonWallace1 Some people do.  However, not everyone is always home.  Remember that Kim Rhode's shotgun was stolen out of her truck.  To a criminal a gun is a portable and valuable item.  Mrs. Rhode's fans wound up getting together $13,000 to buy her a new shotgun.

Generally a responsible gun owner works very hard to avoid any sort of conflict, the article makes that harder.

I hate re-writing these as my first posts are always better, but for some reason this did not post.  I am an NRA member and I am not a NUT, as opposed to what the MSM would like you liberal recliner huggers to believe.  If you believe what you hear, then all "gun owners" are nuts, and we are NOT.  I enjoy shooting sports, targets, clay pigeons, plinking cans, with all sorts of weapons, revolvers, rifles, SKS, AR15's AK47's, etc.  Why would you propose to prohibit my hobby. I also enjoy wooodworking, craft making and other things to relieve the stresses of my workweek.  I, nor did my fellow law abiding GUN OWNERS commit any of these massacres.  So why should you wish to punish us for our pastimes?  This is a knee jerk reaction to what has happened and you wish to blame the "guns" versus the perpetrator(s),  These people acquired the guns illegally and did their dastardly deeds without going through proper chacks and balances...OH  gee they took them illegally from someone else.  That make them criminals...and you equate us law abiding citizens with them?
