There’s currently a single span connecting Detroit to Canada — the Ambassador Bridge — which facilitates about 25% of the total trade between the U.S. and its northerly neighbor. It’s an understandably busy, crucial crossing, and not at all capricious to suggest another bridge would be oft-used and well-warranted. Especially if Canada was offering to pay the estimated $1 billion construction and maintenance costs. But the Ambassador Bridge, and the billionaire that owns it, is threatened by the proposition, worried that it will lead to untold costs for taxpayers. The bridge went to a November vote for Michiganders, who narrowly approved it, but it wasn’t without a battle that seemed awfully lopsided. The Daily Show took a look into the controversy.
