Michelle Obama arrives on stage before addressing the first session of the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C. Sept. 4, 2012.

For Michelle Obama’s 49th birthday, the First Lady debuted not only a new haircut but a new Twitter handle. The new account, @FLOTUS, already has almost 80,000 followers in the 24 hours since the handle was created.

But wait, isn’t there a @MichelleObama already hanging around the interwebs somewhere? Well, it turns out that Twitter account is handled by her husband’s campaign office. @FLOTUS is run by the First Lady’s staff. Although according to a post yesterday, followers can also expect tweets from Michelle herself from time to time:

The Telegraph points out, interestingly, that Michelle doesn’t actually follow her spouse on Twitter — although @barackobama follows @FLOTUS. Still it probably doesn’t matter too much, considering the fact that the President took the First Lady out for her birthday yesterday for some offline quality time. As the Huffington Post mused, the big question is what happens in 2016: will Michelle keep the @FLOTUS handle or pass it off to the next First Lady — or Gentleman?
