Did Beyoncé Lip-Sync the National Anthem at Obama’s Inauguration?

A U.S. Marine Band rep says Beyoncé's performance of the "Star Spangled Banner" had been pre-recorded

During the inauguration of President Barack Obama, Beyoncé’s flawless rendition of The Star Spangled Banner stole the show. Now, some sources are saying the performance could have been too good to be true.

Yesterday, The Washingtonian and others claimed the pop star was lip-syncing, using photos the artist posted to her Instagram account as “proof” that she had pre-recorded the track; The Washingtonian also claimed that the band itself had merely pretended to play its instruments. Today, The London Times published a story claiming to confirm the lip-synching.  Now, the New York Post has jumped into the fray, also claiming to have confirmed the rumor. Both outlets reportedly spoke to a representative or representatives for the United States Marine Band, who revealed to the Post that while the band performed the song live, the singer decided to use a pre-recorded track at the last minute:

“All music is pre-recorded for the ceremony because there are so many eventualities and conditions that day,” Kristin DuBois, a rep for the band tells Page Six. “We performed, live, the band. But we received last-minute word that Beyonce was going to use the pre-recorded vocal track. Those were the instructions we were given. We don’t know what the reason why.”

This is not the first time that the mulit-platinum “Single Ladies” singer has been accused of lip syncing. During the 2009 Oscars, Beyonce’s performance with host Hugh Jackman was the subject of much speculation. When asked about it, Oscar officials would only comment to MTV, “As is the case with any live event of this scale and scope, there are always elements of the show that are pre-recorded. But I will not go into detail about which elements were on this show.”

Watch her performance above and decide for yourself.

Beyonce was asked to sing the National Anthem at one of the most historic events of all time in front of the President, former Presidents, the entire Military and with global leaders watching on every continent---this wasn't a football or baseball game. This was at the National Mall, where Dr King gave his "I Have a Dream Speech", and where the first black president had just stood and was sworn in because people of all colors finally came together, a dream that Dr King and many blacks & whites died for.

The fact that a lesser experienced singer (Kelly Clarkson) sang live in the same weather conditions and did brilliant gives her no excuse----especially when Beyonce's team says she's the best in her field, to the point where Beyonce calls herself "The Queen". Real queens don't lip sync in front of the President at one of the most historic moments in history.

@lifeandlove Excellent. I couldn't have put it better myself. I completely agree with you.

Watch (listen) to  Kelly Clarkson's song.   The accompanyment completely neglected her..... she worked her rear off trying to keep up with their MESS when they should have followed the vocalist, like any proper musician(s) would.   Further, she had to belt the entire song because the band played over her work, drowning out the vocalist.  The conductor IGNORED the vocalists and played louder over them ruining the entire performance. The military gave 3 statements in 2 days, each with obvious lies (e.g., "we don't know if it was lip synched" when they pushed "play" on THEIR recordings?!   ugh.).

The military NEVER lies for anyone - only to "cover" their own image.   If Beyonce stated a personal reason, they DEFINITELY would have blamed/quoted her.  Beyonce did the best thing for the audience and gave them a better performance.    Any professional musician (like me) would applaud her.  If poor Kelly knew about this accompaniment HELL she would have done the same.  Sadly, Kelly was first, when Beyonce heard the horrid mess and chose to give the audience better music.

WHAT A PHONY.  Totally understand that lip syncing is done for certain reasons and this is a very difficult song to sing, but as each day goes by we see how MANUFACTURED and PHONY Beyonce really is.

You people need to get a life.  The music was top notch during the entire ceremony.  What's the big deal?  Live, studio, it's still Beyonce and still the Marine Corp Band.  The hate mongers are getting pretty desperate when they have to attack a singer who did nothing wrong.

@rwryley But where's the mention of the rest of that 'top notch' music in this article? That's my biggest beef. Kelly and James gave it their alls - and did it live - and yet they get no press for it? Seems unfair.

That's why there were no veins popping out of her neck, I get it. Kelly Clarkson's version of "that" song was insignificant!

Kelly sang live...AND gave a better performance. Why is there no mention of her here? Sloppy reporting.
