Lady Gaga Calls Ex-Assistant “A Disgusting Human Being” under Oath

This is what Gaga looks like when she's angry.

It’s Lady Gaga’s universe, and we’re all just living in it. And if you happen to be employed by Mother Monster, you might think twice about slapping her with a lawsuit.

Lady Gaga had some harsh words for the assistant who’s suing the pop star for unpaid overtime, reports the New York Post,  which obtained legal records from a six-hour deposition Gaga gave in August against her former assistant, Jennifer O’Neill, and it’s anything but beautiful in its own way. O’Neill, who worked for the pop singer for roughly two years, claimed in the lawsuit that she put in 7,186 hours of unpaid overtime and is asking for $393,000, plus damages.

Gaga, born Stefani Germanotta, claims O’Neill used her boss’ name to get free swag, didn’t unpack enough of Gaga’s luggage while on tour, overslept, refused to share one of the beds on Gaga’s private jet, wore Gaga’s clothes without permission and was generally ungrateful for the life of luxury that comes when you roll with an international pop star.

“Not that people who do that don’t deserve their hourly pay, but I’m just pointing out that I deserve everything I’ve worked for,” Gaga reportedly said in the testimony. “I deserve every dollar of it. And she deserves every dollar of her $75,000 [annual salary] that we agreed to. But she does not deserve a penny more.”

She also said O’Neill lacked the “knowledge and academia” needed for the job, which she was given, Gaga claims, as essentially a favor to a former friend. But in case there’s any doubt about whether the split was amicable, Gaga said she actually recalls the exact moment she knew their friendship was over: when, after partying all night in Paris and getting “sh– hammered” together with photographer Terry Richardson, O’Neill refused to give up her bed on the plane ride home when Gaga asked her to, telling the singer she had seniority.

“When your best friend looks you in the eye and says, ‘Why can’t I have that seat on your private plane, I’m your friend,’ the first thing I thought was, ‘You’re not my f—ing friend,'” Gaga said.

While O’Neill claims she had to be at Gaga’s beck and call at every moment of the day, Gaga apparently insisted that all her employees work eight-hour days — it’s just that those eight hours are spread throughout the day, not all at once like the rest of us with normal jobs. And while she did reportedly say that she doesn’t pay any of her staff overtime, she does sometimes treat them to $3,000 dinners because she’s a nice lady.

“I’m quite wonderful to everybody that works for me,” Gaga reportedly said at one point to O’Neill in the testimony, “and I am completely aghast to what a disgusting human being that you have become.”

Come on, Gaga, that’s not fair — maybe she was born that way.

Lady GAG is not no lady! She is an untalented, hideously cruel, poor excuse for a human being.  She should not only be sued she should get some of the same torture, pain and agony that her buying fur causes to innocent animals.  BOYCOTT ANYTHING SHE HAS TO DO WITH AND ANY COMPANY THAT SPONSORS HER. DON'T BUY HER MUSIC, NOT ATTEND HER CONCERTS. IF YOU LOVE ANIMALS.... DEFINITELY STAY CLEAR OF THE GAG REFLEX! http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/boycott-lady-gaga-and-all-artists-who-exploit-animals.html

Is Lady Gaga hiring?   I'll work for her for $75k, and I'll throw in the overtime.

you agreed to your salary in your contract.

you should have had a clause for "overtime" - or at least something that kicks in when your activity exceeds the job description's scope.

what is she doing, suing for unjust enrichment?  hope she can prove gaga was successful because of those extra hours.

its more likely she just burned her entertainment industry bridge and wasted a bunch of money for an attorney's retainer, which he probably already used up...

maybe the PA is "the fame monster"

When I was a salaried employee, I put in plenty of "overtime" and did it willingly. It was part of being a good employee in a competitive field. The music and celeb industry is a competitive field. The assistant should be thankful she had such a high salary and such outstanding perks. Frankly, I think people, at least in the U.S., are in general overpaid these days -- a time when so many people willing to work hard are seeking jobs.

I am not even sure why I am commenting, but something about the math stuck out. O'Neill claims to have worked roughly two years.  If that is precisely 2 years, working 7 days per week, with not a single day off or vacation day ever, that would be 9.8 hours of overtime per day.  I have a little trouble believing that this person worked 18 hours per day, every day. Furthermore, she was salaried, which means there is no overtime. She seems to have translated her very generous salary into a $36 per hour job.

I am not a Lady Gaga fan, and might be able to name 2 of her songs. Still, it seems to me that she is pretty generous to give this person $75K. And I have to agree that a person in that position knows that there are tons of percs like jettsetting on private planes, the best hotels and meals and a whole lot of fashion swag. THis person has 2 years to complain about her burdensome work conditions, but only complains after getting canned for not doing her job!?!?!

Sounds like Lady Gaga (what a name for an alleged artist) needs a steel toe boot to the @ss.

What an arrogant self-centered narcissist Lady Gaga is.  She's not even original. She totally ripped Madonna off. I have no clue why anybody finds this trash entertaining.  If you do, you should probably take a step back and re-evaluate your life.  Try and figure out where you went wrong and correct it. Good luck.

What are you talking about, this article makes Gaga look good. What a cheap ass Gaga is by not paying overtime. Would any of you people work 20 hours a day with no overtime? Think about it. Expensive dinners don't pay the rent. Gaga is making enough cash to pay overtime for goodness sakes. And were i come from we give our guests/best friend the bed to sleep before ourselves. But no cheap ass gaga puts her staff in trash can

What an awful article. Completely biased against Gaga and ignoring several major details, like indeed how opportunistic the ex-assistant is.

This is a disgusting cheap tabloid pieces. And of course there's no mention that Jennifer was actually Gaga's best friend since she was 19. But of course, people are going to read and believe it to the t. Pathetic.

"While O’Neill claims she had to be at Gaga’s beck and call at every moment of the day, Gaga apparently insisted that all her employees work eight-hour days — it’s just that those eight hours are spread throughout the day, not all at once like the rest of us with normal jobs."

"Well, if that kind of agreement "work on and off, as I say during 24 hours a day" stands up in court, great. Personally, I don't care how famous the people are that I work for, but I DO expect to get paid with money for my work (and not with a "being with me is also payment" attitude or $3.000 dinners, which don't float my boat an inch).

So, I guess this means that Gaga's employes have to stay "on hold" while they aren't needed and just pop into action at her whim, as so many "stars"have demonstrated. I really don't give a damn about being in celebrity company, or whatever some people (wannabes, fame thirsty, just wanna be CLOSE to it all sort of people) hunger for,   I WAS a fan of hers until I read this article. now, I just like her music.

“Not that people who do that don’t deserve their hourly pay, but I’m just pointing out that I deserve everything I’ve worked for." - Gaga

Gaga needs to spend some time working in the real world for a few weeks. If she seriously thinks that she's earned the money she has, then she's as crazy as she is ugly."

She's never going to get a job like this again so she is looking for a very early retirement.  GO BACK TO SCHOOL!

You're absolutely right. Gaga works hard and she deserves the fame and success. I mean, who wouldn't want to travel around the world with THE HAUS OF GAGA? i.e., DJWS, RedOne, Zedd, Nicola Formichetti, Tara, Gaga's dancers, etc. The Haus is a creative force that influences and inspires people all over the globe from every different culture imaginable. I would love to be on Gaga's digital marketing team. *DIES*

People who are generous with their money often get squeezed. Obviously Gaga can afford to pay her off to shut her up but she's taking a stand. I'm sure she has absolutely no time for nonsense and it sounds like something she's doing on principle. Good for her. Hope she wins and deters other people from exploiting and insulting her. I agree. Honestly what a dream job - nd she got paid more than most assistants just unpacking clothes and doing odd jobs. I bet this girl is an amateur who just got lucky then got lazy and greedy. When you have money there's always a trail of lazy users trying to ride your coat tails while you work your butt off. You really have to shake them off and send a message. I wish her luck.

So you waited until you had worked 7000 hours overtime before questioning your pay? 7000. SEVEN. THOUSAND. Shit. No wonder she's pissed at you.

There are millions of people who would do anything to be Lady Gaga's assistant. And they would do it for free.

ValKain
ValKain

@KenKing  I was wondering that same math.  Is she seriously claiming she worked 109 hours out of a maximum of 168 hours a week?  That would leave 59 hours a week for personal time such as sleeping, eating, and taking breaks.  Being a PA and being at someones beck and call working odd hours here, I can see.  But I cannot imagine someone to be continuously busy working or doing something for 17 hours a day..  As others have mentioned, some of her compensations was tasting a bit of the high life being with the celebrity.

Frankly, Lady Gaga should just ask her fanclub of Little Monsters that she needs 3 people to be her Personal Assistant at Minimum wage.  Tell them they would each put in 8 hours a day, 7 days a week (40hours+16 OT) in shifts to be at her beck and call and get the added bonus of living the high life and traveling with a celeb.  You would see people jump for that job.  I mean 56 hours a week at minimum wage to do very little but be a maid at her whim and get to hang with their fav celeb?  Hiring 3 people to do 56 hours a week at minimum wage would still be cheaper than the 75k salary O'Neill had gotten all for herself.  She should be grateful.

Loumelc
Loumelc

@KenKing 75k a "very generous salary" are you serious?  I'm amazed at how low it is. Personal Assistant jobs are incredibly difficult, even denigrating very often.  Maybe Gaga is a good boss but I have no doubt she'd be very demanding and tough.

There is no way any decent PA would accept less than 100k for this job.  Sure it would have its perks, but there would be plenty of downside too.

PAs in banks, law firms, etc get easily 90k plus per annum.  Many get a hell of a lot more than that, 150k average.

And she would be expected to be on hand seven days a week, 24 hours a day - of course that would be expected by Gaga!  For 75k get a grip Gaga, pay your staff a decent equitable salary!

@evanstyles8

If you notice in the article, it says she was paid a $75,000 annual salary, not paid hourly.  If she was an hourly employee, she would get overtime.  But if you are a salaried employee, you get what you negotiate, regardless of hours worked.  Plus: you don't have to check in and out.  Negative: you get the same pay regardless of hours worked.  However, like someone already mentioned, when you are asking for 7,186 hours of overtime, when were you going to say enough is enough?  If she felt used and overworked, she would have quit or complained in the first 100 hours.  Sounds like someone is disgruntled to me.

Heian

@CharlieBrB Fun fact: You clicked on the article and read it, but are derisive to others who would do so.

Pathetic.

@WilliamBarnes

So after paying the high end salary for what a PA gets, Gaga should pay more? How exactly does it work in your universe to agree to a contract, and then after you are fired for being lousy at your job, you decide you need more compensation? And yes, drinking with stars at after parties and having fun is not really working for Gaga

JhonathanFree

So you believe whatever someone claims in a lawsuit. I want you serving as the juror on my injury lawsuit against home depot. You see I used to be psychic until a board hit me in the head while I was shopping at the Depot (real lawsuit btw)

JuliaOceania
JuliaOceania

@Loumelc @KenKing

Well, if you do your research, generally speaking, PAs make between 60k and 80k a year. If you do the research, you will find that this is true. And I suppose her assistant could have done a tip top job, and asked for more money, the problem was she did not do a good job, and therefore she did not have an opportunity to ask for more money.

The sort of PA that makes the salary that you describe is often Ivy League educated. Depending on your business, you are going to need a certain skillset. Someone who needs a PA that understands finance is going to pay for that knowledge. I do not think that was the sort of work this lady had to do for Gaga. It sounds like she thought her job was being Gaga's friend, and Gaga's mistake was that she sounds as though she treated her as a friend more than a PA. How do you separate out where friendship begins and business ends? How do you in any reality based universe clock hours partying with A listers as "work"? I know many people who travel for work. Most of the time they do not get to clock every hour spent away from home as wage hours. This is why you get a salary with these jobs.

boots
boots

@Loumelc that's only because you don't seem to understand that there is a difference between the low-skilled "I'm basically a full time maid" PA and the infinitely more skilful and highly qualified "I do most of the day to day work, while my boss works his/her charms on big-name contacts to get the company profitable contracts/deals" type of PA. 75k for the second type is grossly underpaying, but for the first type, it's grossly overpaying.

@JuliaOceania @WilliamBarnes Now THAT is REALLY FUNNY! How exactly does it work in MY universe? Well, kid, I guess you'd be better off at answering that, since in MY universe, people who are lousy at their jobs don't get such "(in)famous" people to hire them. I think Lady GAG ON IT should think twice next time if she's picking up help from the same "class" she came from and expecting them to be "grateful". hahahahhahahahahhahahahahhahahahahhahahahahhahahahahahahha.
