Man Turns House Across the Street From Westboro Baptist Church Into Gay Pride Flag

A group infamous for its virulently homophobic views has a colorful new neighbor.

Repainting your house with an unorthodox color scheme can sometimes make your neighbors a little touchy. Particularly, this house — and particularly, these neighbors. Aaron Jackson, who runs the nonprofit group Planting Peace, has painted his newly bought house in Topeka, Kansas with bright rainbow colors — the same as the Gay Pride Flag. But what makes this house special is that it sits right across the street from the Westboro Baptist Church.

Jackson, a self-described news junkie, used Google Earth to locate the church — an organization famous for its virulent anti-homosexual views and its tendency to picket military funerals. But as he zoomed in on the Westboro compound, he realized that the house right across the street had a “For Sale” sign on it. He immediately called a realtor and began drawing up plans to turn the building into a LGBTQ museum — and though zoning laws prohibited that plan he went ahead with the idea of painting the house the colors of the rainbow Pride Flag. Jackson’s mother, an artist, designed the color scheme and flew from Florida this week to help oversee the painters doing the work. Jackson wanted a professional paint crew, he says, because he “wanted [the house] to be taken seriously.” But after they got wind of what he had in mind, five painting companies didn’t return his follow-up calls; a realtor in Kansas City finally put him in touch with a company that was interested in helping out.

Fearing a prohibitive change in town ordinances, the entire project was kept under wraps until earlier this week. But by Wednesday, Jackson says, hundreds of people — not to mention media outlets — were coming to the neighborhood from as far away as Australia to deliver flowers, share their stories or just take a picture in front of the house. Jackson says he’s surprised by the outpouring of support and coverage — “usually people come here to check out the Church,” he tells TIME, “now the attention is on this house.”

For its part, the Westboro Church also welcomed the house — but mostly for the attention it believes Jackson is helping bring to their message: “We thank God for the Sodomite Rainbow House!” begins a church statement emailed to TIME.

Cmon do you realy think that god would care about sexual orientation and the colors of houses much less rainbows ? I'm not a christian anymore but i was brought up in christian ways so i know what jesus and the religion is about everyone who calls themselves a preacher or just a christian and talks in spite about gays is a hypocrite and if you have ever taken the time o actually read the bible and not try to interpret the scripture with bias then you will see that the one of the rare thing jesus hates are hypocritical people Christianity is a religion about love and compassion and forgiveness anti hate preaching individuals are not speakers of christ but just sad little men and women with narrow little minds and i only feel sadness for the fools

I am a Christian, and I won't log back on here in case people are planning to start an argument, but I felt a need to let people know that some Christians are different. I wonder how many of these people quoting scripture on here have ever fed the hungry, loved an unloved child, or visited someone in prison the way that Jesus commanded His followers to do. Some Christians believe that God cast judgement on Sodom because of the immortality of not caring for their neighbor and that was the true wickedness. But it is easier to wag your finger in someone else's face to make you feel better about yourself rather than taking a look inside and making a change. God also told us that He is the judge, not us, but some people prefer to select the scriptures that they like rather than following Jesus. If all of these people who were so worried about homosexuality spent the same amount of time on the orphan crisis, there would be no crisis. If only 1% of Christians adopted an unloved child there would be no orphans. When children are dying alone due to a lack of love and basic needs, what is the real sin? Loving someone of the same sex or living selfishly and ignoring the needs of "the least of these"? Maybe it is both. I am not God and can't judge but I certainly hope that people start looking within before they begin condemning others.

Nothing and I mean NOTHING to be proud of stealing God's rainbow [symbol of covenant that he will not flood earth anymore] and parading immorally on streets in the so called "gay pride parade",...remember satan was cast down for his pride,...pride comes before the fall and oh how great that fall will be [look in history "fallen empires"].

let the bad people suffer.... no rest for the wicked, and they dont take rest to hating gay people so let them enjoy hating them as they get mocked for it. thier own website link says "god hates fags"... so let them say thier motto till they die whenever they go IN to church and out reminded as they walk from thier cars to the church and vice versa of the real reason they are there staring at the nice rainbow house in its neighborhood: to hate like little punks with teenage issues unaware of the gravity of thier actions and ignorant of thier own failure. more people should take arms against  them and do things like this. they think they can get away with harassing and terrorizing people like the little punks they are and they cant

This evil and adulterous generation has had more light of Gods Word than any other. Can they spurn His Gift of salvation and expect anymore than the generation that was witness to Christs warnings.........

.........Luke 19:43-44..........

43 For days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side, 44 and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”

That's great! The Westboro people are hate mongers. While the homosexual sect has their fair share of intolerance while screaming for tolerance,  those are just the radicals, just like the Westboro group of the Christian faith. This form of protest is outstanding. Finally someone put a burr under the Westboro saddle. Keep up the good work!

This takes balls and WBC deserves any kind of revenge, but let God be the judge of that.  Those people picket at military funerals and create newsletters on their websites to do such.  They are horrible, horrible people.  Give'em a taste of their own medicide.  Those satanists deserve everything they get.

Oh boy, these colors are just colors used as natural colors and shouldn't represent gay pride. Dimwits and their disgusting selves! Homosexuality is so unnatural.

@danica And look at all the confused bile spewing "Christians" who jump on a story like this to preach to everyone. I know that not all Christians are the same, but it's almost impossible to believe considering the hatred so many of them preach every hour of the given day.

Attitudes are everything. We have hundreds of thousands of religious fanatics preaching hatred, so why should anyone accept anything any random individual says in contrast to it? It's like saying there are a couple of Taliban who wouldn't shoot a teenage girl in the head for daring to want an education - they might exist, but they are almost impossible to find.

I'm sorry to say it, but in the last ten years I have gone from being an Atheist happy to listen and be open minded, to being totally against Christianity. When I meet someone who has "Christian values" I give them a chance, but 99% of the time I walk away, and fast. No sane person should ever put up with being "judged" by others as though they are a lesser species of Human, and anyone who tries to tell me that they are better than me because they read a fairytale once is not going to have my respect or even my presence.

It's sad, and it's not your fault, but the rest of your religion is painting you as a bigot by association. That's the reality of it. I know of plenty of other LGBT people who feel exactly the same way.

Christianity has done this to itself. It is a failing religion, declining in numbers, because of the refusal to modernize or reflect society. It has become irrelevant to most, and in my opinion that can only be a good thing.

If REAL Christians want to change the perception of their faith, they have to do a lot more than just say "they don't speak for me", because right now they are. You need to make it clear that this is not acceptable, protest, fight it from within, force modernization and make your faith relevant to people. Until liberally minded honest Christians actually work to remove this bigoted cancer, nothing will change and most LGBT people will view all Christians with suspicion and animosity.

@Crossroads Ooh, another cherry-picking Christian who ignores all the other little inconvenient things in the bible but likes to preach the bits that suit their bigotry and hatred, what a surprise!

Oh, and let me guess, you're a white, Republican American, you own at least one gun and haven't been to church in over three months. Yeah, I know people like you lol

@CeltricNight7 You are not only bigoted, you are factually incorrect. Homosexuality has been documented in every observable species where proper scrutiny has taken place. This is a scientific fact.

Other species have no concept of religion either, so tell me, which is more "unnatural", homosexuality or believing in an invisible sky wizard?

Given that homosexuality has been proven throughout carious species, and given that religious faith is exclusive to Humans, tell me again which is more unnatural.

Please find me any animal on this planet that shows any sign of having faith in any religion, then come back to me. I wish you luck, and at least it'll keep you busy and away from the rest of the sane Human population for a while.

@CeltricNight7 pink is just a color, yet it represents breast cancer awareness. do you complain about that? rainbow has been adopted as a representation & there is nothing wrong with that. gays should feel proud to be able to come out and live openly instead of their life being lived as a lie or comitting suicide to avoid the way they feel & the ridicule they would have from people like you. god forbid. . . love is natural & that is what matters, not who we love. God is trying to spread that message, cant you feel that?? animal instincts do not prevent to males or two females for doing their business together. so who are you to say what is or is not natural to you, just because you do not naturally feel attracted to the same sex? we are all different in many ways, this is one of them. accept it. god wants us to, listen & youll hear his true message within you. you wont need a book to tell you what he believes. but you have to let go of your prejudice first.

@RebeccaMyersLauer Bible is all intepretation. They are valid in calling themselves Christians just like any other Christian. They just choose the worst bits in the bible (which there is a lot of) so they're still christians.

Just as a christian picks and chooses the good bits, and ignoring the bad bits, or not following the OT, or killing those who work on sundays.
