It became clear that the U.S. was not equipped to fight Islamic extremism in western Europe when the “shoe bomber,” British national Richard Reid, tried to set off explosives hidden in his footwear aboard American Airlines Flight 63 from Miami to Paris. In October 2002, Reid pleaded guilty to eight charges, and in January 2003, he was sentenced to life in prison and fined $2 million.
