This cover profiled the federal operation that captured “The Unabomber,” a shaggy, Harvard-educated mathematician and anti-technology zealot named Theodore John Kaczynski, at his Montana cabin after an 18-year search—at the time the most expensive hunt for a serial killer ever. The agents knew they had arrived at the right place when they saw Kaczynski’s signature lethal contraptions made out of wood, sources told TIME. UNABOM—short for university and airline bombing—was the nickname for the operation to nab Kaczynski, whose bombing spree had killed three and injured 22.
