105-Year-Old Woman Says Bacon Keeps Her Alive

Should the adage be “a bit of bacon every day, keeps the doctor away”?

What’s the secret to an extra-long life? For one centenarian, it just might be bacon.

A 105-year-old Texas woman, who became a widow at age 38 and worked as everything from a cotton picker to a hay baler while raising 7 kids on her own, says bacon is the secret to her longevity, the Huffington Post reports.

“I love bacon. I eat it everyday,” Pearl Cantrell told NBC affiliate KRBC when asked her secret to living so long.  “I don’t feel as old as I am. That’s all I can say,” Cantrell added.

The great-great-grandmother, who lives in central Texas and still dances – some of her favorites include country dancing, waltzing and two-stepping – celebrated her 105th birthday recently with a three-day event that included more than 200 guests. Although Cantrell retired decades ago, she kept mowing her own lawn until the age of 100, according to the West Texas Tribune  – a heart-healthy habit that probably helped keep her going as well.

When Oscar Mayer found out about Cantrell’s love of cured pork, they sent one of its Wienermobiles to her home with a special bacon delivery.  The bacon-lover rode “shot-bun” in the Wienermobile through her hometown of Richland Springs, Texas, ABC 7 News reported.

Despite its popularity, or perhaps because of it, bacon’s gotten a bad rap lately. A University of Zurich study published by the journal BMC Medicine in March found that processed meat was linked to a premature death. The study, which analyzed the diets of more than 440,000 people between the ages of 35 and 69, found that eating processed meats in moderation–less than 20g per day–could prevent an estimated 3% of premature deaths each year.  As The Atlantic pointed out, however, that’s equivalent to a matchbook-sized portion. An earlier study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine last March found that even a single serving of processed red meat (yes, that includes bacon) increased the risk of participants dying by 20%. That study tracked over 121,000 doctors and nurses over the course of 22 years.

Cantrell was not among either study’s participants.

I just went on a long road trip with my mom and I learned about my great great aunt pearl. I felt an instant connection and even though she is not here anymore I look up to this woman so much. I have been reading about her and I have gotten in touch with some of my family from that side. She was a remarkable woman and for the people who want to steal the joy of her long life and turn it around on abusing animals...y'all are ignorant. She didn't live 105 Years of abusing animals, she lived 105 Years bringing happiness to everybody around her. Animals get slaughtered and will continue to be slaughtered no matter what so don't steal her joy. She was an outstanding woman and it is such a blessing she lived for as long as she did. I regret that I didn't get know all of this while she was still here on earth but I know I will get a chance to meet her one day and until then I am very proud to say she is my family.

What a poorly researched and written article. You found one person who lived to old age and ate bacon every day so you reported that her longevity is due to her steady diet of bacon. You could have reported it was because she worked in manual labour jobs and that she continues to be physically active even now that she is 105. No, it must be the bacon right? Couldn't the headline have been that "keeping active keeps you alive"? I guess that wouldn't have the same click through rate. A better headline would have been that a woman contributed to the enslavement, cruelty and slaughter of pigs for over a century. At least it would be accurate. 


I don't even need to read the study to know you have misquoted it. Everybody has a 100% chance of dying. Everybody. So how can anything increase the risk by 20%? Did you do any fact checking or get someone to look at your sentence construction before you put it out there for the world to read? And the sentence where you wrote that a study "found that processed meat was linked to a premature death". Seriously, just a death, just the one? Was there only one person in the study that ate processed meat?


This is clearly meat industry propaganda and the author is so lacking in integrity that she has tried to pass it off as a news article. Ask heart surgeons if “a bit of bacon every day keeps the doctor away”. I am sure they will tell you about all the quality time they get to spend with sickly bacon eaters and their horrendous clogged arteries. 


Time, this is a trashy new low for you. Maybe you should focus on reporting alien abductions, it would be more credible than this article but you probably want to have someone with better English language skills write it. Nobody has been fooled by your poorly written, unresearched propaganda piece for animal agriculture. Shame Time, shame.

Clearly, that 105 year old Texas woman loves bacon...Foods we enjoy eating, ones that are considered junk food, have a positive effect on the psyche, and, as a result of that, that person may be less proned to diseases than a vegan who is stressed out often, because of his/her job and/or personal issues...I think moderation is a good rule to follow, in whatever we choose to indulge in...I think we, also, have to micro-analyse these issues, that, oftentimes, are spoken of in a general way...If the bacon one consumes comes from a pig that was organically raised, in a clean environment, why shouldn't that particular bacon be considered healthy...Further, if that bacon has no added preservatives, fillers, artificial colouring, etc., I consider it to be healthy...So, I think every food can be healthy, if it's organically raised, though, red meat seems to be unhealthy, according to the experts, no matter what...Interestingly, though, when asked the secret of her longevity, Julia Child said red meat and gin...Some persons who smoke a lot don't necessarily lives short lives...However, I think it's important to realize that such persons are the exception and not the rule...Bottomline, I think we should enjoy the foods we eat, not be so stringent in our diets that we don't indulge in a few of our favourite junk foods, from time to time and I think we should bear in mind, most of all, the negative effects that stress/stressors can have on our minds and/or bodies....My rule of thumb is to eat my favourite foods, even ones considered junk, but find a way to make those foods healthy, or, find the healthier, organic versions of those foods, in the supermarket/health food stores...No food is bad for us...It's just choosing the ones that have the healthiest ingredients, except maybe red meat, but, in moderation, I don't think red meat will necessarily have a negative effect on our bodies...Here are a few tips that I try to live by : Don't smoke cigarettes; don't drink alcohol often or in abundance; avoid eating foods that contain artificial preservatives, trans fats, hydrogenated oils, fillers or artificial colouring; avoid eating processed sugar (use honey or agave, instead) ; avoid eating table salt (unless it's Himalayan); drink Green Tea often; Eats lots of fruit and vegetables; Eat brown rice/whole wheat bread/whole wheat pasta, over white rice/white bread/regular pasta; Try not to worry; Breathe properly.

We vegans aren't stressed out because of our job or personal issues any more than anyone else. If we are stressed out it is because our eyes are open to the unending cruelty in the world, of which we are mostly helpless to end. Perhaps being oblivious torthe suffering of others or the plight of our planet and thus the future for our children can lead to a long life, in which case I gladly enjoy an early grave. How many animals suffered and died for the life of one human that lived to be 105 allegedly because she ate bacon daily. Ha ha. Isn't it fun! Not for the pigs. Yes, we vegans are stressed daily to see the cruelty imposed by humans both on their own kind and on all the other animals, both directly and intentionally, and indirectly as a result of the sense of entitlement that humans seem to feel to own, rape, clear, mine, dominate, fence in and slaughter everything they desire.

I had a geat uncle lived to be 103 Working with chickens and tending a apple orchard till the last two years of his life, he always had stuff to do and kept busy.. yet he drank two fingers of whiskey everynight for almost 58 years and still made it ...  seems lifestyle diet sleep and guilty pleasures all have to be measured if your going to make it to 100.

Did you notice that the study that said bacon would lead to an early death included only doctors and nurses? Have you ever studied the obits? Whenever they include the deceased's occupation, notice that most of the time people in the medical field die well before retirement age. I'm pretty sure it's not an overabundance of bacon that's killing them!

There are too many people who earn their living and have high paying jobs in the government, telling us what we should be eating, for this continuous stream of bad information about food to stop.  Personally I think it's all the chemicals that manufacturers put in foods to preserve or thicken them or enhance taste that are killing us and causing our internal chemical system to get our of whack.  The supplement purveyors and the Centrum people give us health in a bottle.  In reality most of them wash out of our body in our urine.  Only real food has all the necessary ingredients in a neat little package to allow us to assimilate them properly.  They warned us about salt.  Now it appears that it only harms you if you are "sensitive to salt."  What a job to have, the food police.  With each new revelation in food research they can change their mind and no one says, "wait a minute, yesterday if I ate bologna I was going to died an early, ugly death. Now you are saying those white bread, mayo and bologna sandwiches are okay?"

Food doesn't have as much of an effect as you might think on health issues. Food is a risk factor for diabetes, but not the only one. It's a risk factor for heart attack, but not the only one. And so on.

Wait, so you're telling me, if I don't eat red meat, I only have an 80% chance of dying (20% chance of living forever I guess...)? Or do people who eat red meat have a 120% change or dying?

Or do you just really need some more context on that sentence like "dying of..." or "dying within [time frame]"?

I love bacon. Dose it have it's down side, sure. Everything dose. There isn't a single thing in this world that dose not have risk attached to it. I'd rather eat and do what I love and be happy than be unhappy. I'll take the risks. I understand them and accept full responsibility for myself. After all it's not how long you live it's how well.

Avoiding eating more than 20g of processed meat was protective.  Eating 20g of processed meat a day was not.  There is a ton of difference between the two.  One old lady who lived a long time while eating bacon doesn't mean that bacon gave her longevity.  More likely it means that bacon failed to rob her of a long life due to other factors like genetics and exercise that have kept her going.
