Chicken Charlie's

Hot on the heels of National Doughnut Day and the launch of Dunkin’ Donuts’ Glazed Doughnut Breakfast Sandwich, a Krispy Kreme Sloppy Joe debuted at the San Diego County Fair last weekend. Chicken Charlie’s is dishing out ground beef topped with melted cheese, all sandwiched between two halves of a Krispy Kreme glazed doughnut until the fair ends on July 4.

The hearty sandwich is just the latest artery-clogging fair food to make headlines, following in a long tradition that includes everything from Kool-Aid pickles to corn dogs. In fact, this particular vendor – a mainstay at California fairs – has also served up deep-fried Twinkies, Girl Scout cookies, even frog legs.

Krispy Kreme had nothing to do with this particular incarnation, however, so you won’t find it in a nearby franchise. “I don’t foresee the inclusion of this type of product in our menu any time, but we like it,” says Krispy Kreme PR manager Lafeea Watson. She added, “We have done some very unique things with our doughnut,” including doughnut sundaes, doughnut shakes, and doughnut cakes.

If you’re craving an over-the-top Krispy Kreme doughnut but can’t make it to San Diego, might we suggest the caramel chocolate pretzel doughnut, arriving in participating stores nationwide on June 24? Stuffed with chocolate “Kreme,” it’s topped with caramel icing and salted pretzels. Yum.
