The pate isn’t the only valuable location for hair collectors. In 2012, a mustache hair removed from the death mask of famed bank robber sold for auction for $5,400. Oddly enough, a copy of the death mask itself went for considerably less when it was put up for sale—Chicago businessman Ed Hirschland paid $3,660 (including commission) for it in 2010, but admitted that he probably wouldn’t display the plaster cast. “It’s so creepy,” he said. “It’s more likely to stay in the box.”
