This is the main reason hot dog stand owners such as myself prefer to use all beef hot dogs. What some people may not know is that by law, beef cannot be separated mechanically ever since the mad-cow disease epidemic. So if you want a hot dog, don't go cheap and go all beef as they will use a more premium cut of the meat and you will not get a bunch of unwanted body parts as with chicken, turkey, or pork. Kosher beef, even better.

That meat paste is no different than the meat paste made by Great-Grandma in her kitchen and canned for use in sandwiches.  Face it, there's no neat, pleasant way for butchering a hog, cow, or chicken and cut it up into the wrapped packages of boneless chicken breasts, pork chops, and steaks.  And don't even think about how those hamburgers in the fast food restaurants...and your own kitchen...come to be.  It comes from the trimmings, just like the hot dog paste and with a bigger chance of being contaminated.

We as humans eat a lot of things we are better off not knowing how they are made. My mom went to a cottage cheese factory on a high school field trip, it took her almost 15 years after that before she would eat cottage cheese again. Now she does but she still has to get the memories out of her mind as she eats it. Beef tends to hang for a few days to add flavor, even just cut meat.....sourkrot is another thing that you are better off not smelling while it's fixed.

Of the billions produced, very unlikely any of us have eaten any of the above complaints, like winning lottery chances...

If you saw and knew what was really in food and how it got to you, it would throw you off your feed. But really they aren't do anything different them when you make a cake, add, mix, cook. The fact they use mechanically separated meat means they are use the pig, cow or whatever to it fullest extent and not wasting it is a good thing.

What's not being said is that all food, including fresh food, has a certain amount of contamination, has a certain chance of bugs, etc. Making out that hot dogs are something especially bad? They're inspected by the FDA, just like other food made in the US. If you want scare stories, try shopping for Indian food imported from India. I've seen leaking jars on the shelves (in the US), and bought a package of pancakes that had interesting, regular stripes. On inspection, getting them home, they were animal hair.

Anything with the words "mechanically separated [anything]" does not go in my cart or my mouth.

@bellaluna30 What does it matter if a machine separates the bits of meat?  Cleaner than a butcher hacking away at a whole chicken, chopping through joints, slicing out gizzards, hearts, and livers, etc.

Everyone knows, the cheaper the meat (and meat approximations) in hotdogs, the better they taste.

There's no ham in a hamburger but there maybe some dog in your hot dog.

I enjoyed the video.  It inspired me to make spaghetti for dinner instead of hot dogs on the barbie.  Note the color of the "meat" used as the initial ingredient.  It was rather an interesting shade.  What was it, tendons?

@MikeRyan

Do you know how spaghetti is made? Trust me  of course it can't contain more than 225 bug parts in 225 grams of pasta. And the tomato sauce can contain 30 fly eggs per 100 grams.

I was going to grill hamburgers today but I think I've changed my mind.
