KFC Is Not Amused by ‘Hitler’ Fried Chicken

It's Hitler vs Colonel Sanders

A restaurant in Thailand has made KFC snap to Achtung!

In late May, Andrew Spooner, author of the “Footprint Thailand Handbook,”  tweeted a photo of the restaurant:

Now Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) may sue the fried chicken restaurant, which is called “Hitler,” for replacing its iconic image of Colonel Sanders with Adolf Hitler, complete with apron and bow tie. The restaurant sells fried chicken as well as chips, burgers and kebabs, according to the Daily Mail, and is still open for business. Bangkok resident Alan Robertson told the Mail: “The place opened last month and nobody quite knows what to make of it. I went in for a bite last week and got some fried chicken, which was pretty good, and asked the guy behind the counter why it was called Hitler. He just shrugged his shoulders and said the owners had thought it was good image.”

KFC officials said they may take legal action against the restaurant if it doesn’t cease and desist immediately. “We find it extremely distasteful and are considering legal action since it is an infringement of our brand trademark and has nothing to do with us,” a spokesperson for Yum!, KFC’s parent company, told the Huffington Post.

Colonel Sanders is not the first face of a fast food restaurant to get the Hitler treatment. The restaurant appears to be a continuation of a trend that CNN dubbed “Hitler chic,” a trend in which pop culture icons are recreated to resemble the former Nazi leader. One of the more popular images designs, features McDonald’s mascot Ronald McDonald transformed into a cartoon Hitler complete with bouffant red hair.

In the U.S., JCPenney was under fire in May for a billboard advertisement of a teapot with a resemblance to Hitler. The Texas-based company eventually pulled the ad after backlash.

Update: According to the Bangkok Post, the Hitler chicken restaurant mentioned in this story has changed its name:  “The ‘Hitler’ restaurant has long since undergone an image makeover as the owner wanted to avoid criticism of any Nazi association.” The Post continues: “The restaurant is in Ubon Ratchathani, not Bangkok  … Today it is known as ‘H-ler’ and bears a different sign, a local correspondent in the northeastern province said.” This story has been updated to reflect the new information.

Best fantasy football team name ever!

....and if you're curious, we're 7-1. The blemish came in week 3 mainly due to a few poor coaching decisions. LMFAO. Seriously, learn to laugh people. That was like 100 yrs ago, oh but they never let you forget. Well all I have to say is, "FREE PALESTEIN!"  What's their catch phrase, "Six Million (open for debate) Herbs and Spices?"

Wow, what an incredibly shallow article from TIME, it just goes "LOOK AT THAILAND, THEY ARE WEIRD/WRONG" without explaining WHY.

So here you go, let me tell you WHY this happens in Thailand

Thailand was an Axis country and declared war on Britain and the US after they surrended (less than 1 day of actual conflict) with Japan. Nazi Germany was also a huge trading partner with Thailand.

Because of this relationship, Britain and the US conducted bombing raids over Bangkok. When Japan was clearly losing the war, the Thai government distanced themselves from Tokyo and began negotiations with the Allies. Thailand doesn't have particularly strong feelings attached to Hitler and Nazi Germany never bombed them.

The last time I was in Thailand, Nazi imagery was something I saw on the occasional T-shirt or outside the store. It's like this in China and India too (both were supported by Nazi Germany in WW2). Pretty much any country that's felt the boot of european Imperialism will have a neutral view of WW2 Europe (as everyone involved is a jerk).

And Thais are just naturally nice, forgiving people. The allied countries did a lot of damage to Thailand post WW2, turning it into a sex stop for soldiers in Asian wars, even bringing the AIDS crisis to Thailand. But you don't see Thais burning any American, French, or British flags. So if some Thais want to eat some Hitler fried chicken, no westerner has any moral right to judge.

When Colonel Sanders, as part of a mission to Hitler's Germany, attached to the staff of George Marshall, asked the Fuhrer if he enjoyed fried chicken, the leader of Germany replied in a tone of absolute contempt that he despised chicken and wouldn't eat it in any form.

George Marshall writes in his memoirs that Col. Sanders turned to him and said under his breath, "See that man?  See that man?  That man there is going to cause a Holocaust."

Prophetic words, because that's exactly what happened.

While their food is always oven-fresh, the problem is that it tends to be burnt to a crisp. Be sure to request their tasty Zyklon sauce--not too spicy, but very tangy. A little goes a long way.

Because only KFC could get their panties in a wad over a small fried chicken shop in Thailand.  Morons

For everyone who is deeply offended by this...just imagine how peeved Hitler would be that his image is being used to market low-quality mass produced fried chicken. How very undignified for someone who considered himself very powerful and deserving of great respect! ...Now, do you feel better? ;)  And yes, I'm jewish!

well, after reading through the mostly very ignorant and cruel comments in rep0ly to my post, I have to agree with Randy Manchester...if you all want to slowly kill yourself and if you want to think of yourselves as "superior" to other beings we share this planet with, go ahead, shoot yourselves in the foot. All I know is that since becoming vegan my health and my conscience have improved tremendously and I love helping the planet out too.

this is no surprise at all...... I live here in Thailand and his face is everywhere... People here ride around with nazi flags on the back of motorbikes too.

The thing is, Thai's have zero sense of history at all.. They don't know what he did or the nazi's did.  All they know is to respect charismatic people, regardless of whhat they have done.

Every year you here of a school in thailand that has students dress up as the SS or nazis complete with the teachers in role as well for sports day..  The schools often sponsor these events and then act like they have no idea its happening..   This is what happens in countries whose sole focus is on maths and sciences

This is sad.. just let them know that Hitler was an ally of Japan during WW2.. They may be ignorant of Hitlers war crimes during ww2, but I am willing to bet they know of Japan's that may give them an idea of how bad this really is by using history they would know.  A "Dont take our word for it but to let you know he and Japan were allies then".

@CalvinVelander

Under U.S. trademark law, if a trademark holder doesn't aggressively defend its mark, it can be held to have abandoned its rights to use the trademark exclusively.  This is especially true when the offending business gets wide publicity, such as on the internet, for its improper use of the trademark.

@VeganTam  - Medical research has shown that a vegan diet is NOT good for you.  Humans MUST have protein from animal sources to maintain healthy brain functions.

By the way, have you ever seen a vegan Lion or Hawk or Dolphin or Wolf?

@iankalway  - The Nazi symbol does NOT belong to the Nazis.  It goes back in human history for hundreds of centuries.  It was a sign of good luck once.

@BogusGenuine - If his Generals had listened to him instead of trying to kill him he probably would have won.  We now know he was only a couple of months away from perfecting his A-Bomb.  With the giant flying wing we was building he would have pushed the Allies back to America and forced a surrender.

@BS_Button Come to think of it, it's really not. So I think I'll open a Che Guevara taco stand. Yeah, I know that's not the food of his culture, but so what. Fried chicken ain't exactly German cuisine. The hipsters will love it or they'll hate it, but eat there ironically. Either way, who cares? Nothing matters as long as you can make a buck.

@BS_Button Che Guevara isn't being used as the head of Colonel Sanders to sell fried chicken. KFC would sue someone doing that too.
