Don't worry, no one ate them

Here’s a video that may spoil your appetite: Footage of raw meat left by a dumpster outside a Golden Corral restaurant in Florida has gone viral on Reddit, The Huffington Post and The Atlantic Wire report.

In the clip, an employee who identifies himself as Brandon Huber takes viewers behind the scenes of the Port Orange location of the buffet chain, and shows flies swarming around trays of uncooked hamburger patties, ribs, pot roast meat, chicken, ham, bacon, plus gravy and green bean casserole sitting out near the dumpster. Huber claimed the restaurant was even undergoing a health department inspection at the time. “I don’t want to cook this food, I don’t feel safe with it,” Huber says in the second part of the video, in which he goes on a rant and calls the management negligent.

On Monday morning, Golden Corral posted a short statement on Twitter and a more lengthy one on the controversial video’s YouTube page, which already boasts thousands of outraged comments.

The Port Orange location is not the only Florida location that has been deemed unsanitary. The Atlantic Wire points out that Tampa’s ABC affiliate reported on a maggot infestation in the dumpster area of a Golden Corral in the city – plus myriad temperature violations inside the buffet, according to health inspection reports.

The most well-known example of poor food handling practices is Diane Sawyer’s 1992 ABC News segment on the supermarket Food Lion, in which cameras caught employees selling meat and fish beyond their expiration dates and even coating them in Clorox to cover up the bad smell. And in the past five years, prankster employees at fast-food chains have grossed out customers by…

I ate at Golden Corral once near Disney in Florida and it was by far the worst buffet I have ever gone to! The food tasted of pure salt and it was disgusting! Yes, I understand that salt is a food preservative but I should still be able to taste the food. I complained to the staff which spoke very little english, sadly to say, and after about ten mins of arguing the guy finally agreed to give me my money back.

From that experience alone, I will never go back to GC.

Please change your name to:  "GOLDEN DUMPSTER."  But mainly, thank you. Brandon!

@goldencorral - Please give me a reason why all of that food would have been moved to the dumpster area.  Regardless of your weak excuse that it was your Associate Manager that "made a bad decision to improperly store food when the corporate inspector made a routine inspection."  I think that comment says it all.  Your associate manager that I am sure was trained by some level of upper management saw a random inspection coming and clearly believed that food would not pass inspection.  So he ordered your worker to wheel out all of the food that wouldn't pass inspection to the dumpster area so he wouldn't find it.  And even if he did find it then you could claim it was out there because it was conveniently being thrown away.  This is what is wrong with people like you.  A member of your management attempts to sneak food that cannot pass inspection by one of your inspectors and one of your workers is brave enough to call him out on it and tell the entire world which.....WE DESERVE TO KNOW ABOUT and you want to take the position that you are disappointed in your employee.  Of course you are disappointed.  You would prefer to sweep it under the rug.  Too bad pal.  We as Americans don't care if you have 110 employees.  Don't try to play the sympathy card with us.  The Golden Corral chain of restaurants is dirty and feeds masses of obese Americans that go into those all you can eat places for food that YOU SIR WOULD NOT EAT FOR DINNER OR SERVE TO YOUR FAMILY.  If you had a shred of integrity you would promote Brandon Huber to Associate Manager so if anyone is actually dumb enough to eat at your restaurant ever again at least they will know that someone has some standards and is looking out for their health.  The situation may have been corrected internally but we as Americans still have a right to know how dirty restaurants like yours are behind closed doors.  I am sure this was not the first time food was unfit to be served and was wheeled outside to avoid failing inspection and then actually served later that day.  If you think we believe any differently as Americans then you are dumber then you already appear to everyone reading this article.

Eric Holm, owner of the Port Orange, FL Golden Corral restaurant, commented:

Golden Corral Corporation and I take great pride in maintaining high standards of food quality, sanitation and guest experience. The Port Orange incident was a result of the Associate Manager making a bad decision to improperly store food when the corporate inspector made a routine, unannounced visit to the restaurant. I apologize that a member of my management team made this bad decision.  To be clear, this inspection was conducted by Golden Corral Corporation. Brandon Huber did notify my area manager of the issue, and we acted swiftly to dispose of all the improperly stored foods. No guest was served any of this food that was handled improperly.

Brandon Huber actually assisted in the disposal of the food items the day before he posted the videos.  I am personally disappointed that Mr. Huber chose to post the videos and make false statements after the situation was corrected.

I have a fantastic team of 110 hard-working people at the Port Orange restaurant.  Again, I apologize for this unfortunate incident.

@goldencorral bull crap.. had Brandon not disclosed the situation, what do you think would have happened to the food, that you alleged was not served to customers.

@goldencorralComplete lies and typical PR crap. You don't "throw out" entire meat carts and metal trays worth hundreds of dollars. And what about the pictures of another Golden Corral's disgusting and unsafe kitchen? Must be another not-so isolated incident. Link: http://imgur.com/a/lneFW#0

The food was thrown away before the video was posted.  I think the video implies that the food was going back in to be cooked, but Brandon knew that it wasn't and even disposed of it himself.  The video should have said "look at all this food we are about to waste by throwing it away."  Then he could have shown himself throwing all the food into the dumpster.
