How Coffee Could Save Your Life

Yet another reason to indulge your caffeine addiction

To hear most recent research tell it, coffee is a miracle drink. The magic beans will ward off skin cancer and Alzheimer’s, reduce heart failure and diabetes risks, heighten focus, and maybe even protect liver health. Oh, and decrease suicide risk, according to the newest study that validates our coffee addictions.

According to a study performed by the Harvard School of Public Health and published this month in The World Journal of Biological Psychiatry, people who drink two to four cups of java each day are less likely to commit suicide than those who don’t drink coffee, drink decaf, or drink fewer than two cups each day. The study followed over 200,000 people for at least 16 years. And it’s not just a weak link: the researchers found that the suicide risk was cut by around 50 percent for caffeine fiends.

(MORE: Caffeine Withdrawal Is Now A Mental Disorder)

This isn’t the first time that researchers have discovered that coffee and smiles might go hand-in-hand. A 2011 study found that women who drink coffee cut their risk of depression by 15 percent compared to those who don’t. Michel Lucas, the head researcher of the most recent study, told The Huffington Post that coffee addicts can thank caffeine for the good news. The drug may actually act like a mild anti-depressant by tweaking levels of happy hormones like serotonin and dopamine.

Of course, there’s plenty of research out there that doesn’t look so kindly upon coffee drinkers. Recently, the New Yorker published an article arguing that while coffee may heighten focus, that means it also puts a squeeze on creativity. And of course, coffee’s well-known negative effects like insomnia and disturbed sleep cycles still hold.

Regardless, we’ll raise our mugs to this most recent study for giving us one more validation for our vice.

Thanks {www.prophetofgoddess.com, spells@prophetofgoddess.com} for "The Jinx Killer Spell & Multiply Money Spell which worked like a charm. The Jinx Killer Spell took around 6 days for it to work and the Multiply Money Spell took about 2 days after you casted the spell for it to work, too. Me and my boyfriend noticed a difference. Coffee in the morning is one of the few things left in my life that I look forward to. So I am glad someone thinks it's good for me. lol there are things that I fear may be the death of me, one is stressing about how to pay for all the things a person must keep up, like insurance(health, life, auto, homeowners, etc.). they don't come cheap and what's a person going to do if they can't afford all that "mandatory" insurance?

Just asking...who funded the research, coffee moguls? By the way I am a regular coffee drinker.

That's good 'cause I drink about a liter of the mud each day, and it makes me feel pretty much right at home.

I've done a lot of reading and research on adrenal insufficiency but so much of it is anecdotal. Though I've not come across Dr. Morse so I'll check it out. Thank you.

Caffeine is a drug (tobaco and alcohol are in that row as well). Taking a drug you need to understand that there are always side effects, continuing taking drugs makes you weaker and weaker, leaving you less and less chance to change something in your life to positive.  When you cannot resist from taking drugs? When you are unconfident, when you are nervous, when you are tired, unhappy or angry... - that is when you are feeling negative emotions, to be in short. Why not remove the root of the problem - that is negative emotions? Then you will not need drugs - nighther coffee, nor any other drug. Do you think it's difficult to elimininate negative emotion? But did you ever think it's possible right now, right here to stop feeling something unpleasant and to start feeling something pleasant (like enthusiasm, anticipation, joy, etc.) - and to do it with your own direct effort?! Why not? Why not try? Everyone who tries - succeeds. What's the use of continuosly feeling negative emotions? Why not throw away this crap? If this idea seems interesting to you - here you feel find additional information http://bodhi.name/samadhi/for/eng/index-samadhi-eng.htm

Article is good, but this is not new and once in every week if not month this kind of articles float. With out the details of how the coffee should be prepared and drink, its absolutely crap.

At least in India, coffee means a drink that composed of milk, water, sugar and coffee powder.

After reading this if people start drinking 2 cups of coffee with above mentioned sugar will spoil your health...

How many poeple out of 200 000 killed themselfs for that study?? This doesn't make sense

I'm fairly certain any statistician would completely disagree with your characterizations of the findings of said study--not because they're all medical professionals, but because you have here drawn a spurious correlation that the study did not suggest. The data indicate that those who drink two or more cups of coffee each day are less likely to commit suicide--not that drinking two or more cups of coffee each day makes a person less likely to kill him- or herself. This likely has far more to do with the fact that those who feel the need maintain such high levels of focus are generally more motivated and productive individuals who, by their very natures, are less likely to commit suicide. You're seriously reducing your credibility by publishing articles like this, TIME.

Out of the aforementioned caffeine benefits, i can only agree partly for the heightened focus because some people like me can immune the effect. I don't see how caffeine can really reduce the risks of diabetes and heart failure as well as protect liver health. People often drink coffee with sugar and cream and not many people can drink plain coffee due to the bitterness. Even the doctors advise diabetes patients do not drink coffee. Besides, people generally drink coffee to stay awake to do their work until late night. By forcing their body to stay focus, doesn't that mess up with the body clock? Consequently, that gives great pressure to the heart and liver. Hence, how on earth can caffeine reduce the risk of diabetes, heart failure, and liver problem?

If the author really wants to show the benefits of drinking coffee, why don't make a comparative study like banana versus caffeine? Why don't recommend something which is more natural instead of caffeine?

Personally, if you want to live healthy, remember the four pillars of life:
1. Eat well
2. Sleep well
3. Exercise more
4. Positive attitude

WARNING: DON'T RELY ON CAFFEINE!!

Your body does not need caffeine but water for blood circulation.
Hence, please drink more water.

Have a nice day.

My late mum drank at least 4 cups of coffee a day, yet was very depressed.  According to my useless eldest sister, my mum told her that she was going to commit suicide.  My mum died of a brain haemorrhage on April 24, 2009.  I am filled with guilt for not returning home to my old country to take care of her, but one of my brothers did hire a maid for her.  She was not alone.

"..will ward off..." Is rare to see in a medical report.  The most used word is "may", which is literally equivalent to "may not".  Anyway, this coffee drinker since 1958 has had semiannual skin cancer surgeries since 1978.  So, now I shouldn't stop coffee or be accused as a suicide?  Wait, coffee lowers that risk too?  What to do?

JonathanSmith1

The need for coffee as a stimulant is a signal your body has poor adrenal function and poor adrenal function can result in medical problems that appear totally unrelated to adrenals. Coffee is a poor substitute for what the body should be doing and coffee is another artificial stimulant the body can do without. It is acidic and acids cause weight gain and high cholesterol, that lead to heart problems. Of course the cholesterol gets a bad rap here because narrow minds think that is a problem when it is merely a symptom. People like Mds, the drug industry, and the AMA because there is big money is statin medication and according to the current organized medical crime cartel  everybody needs them.

All the benefits from coffee drinking that have been proposed DO work for me and my family line so the studies may want to correlate some family history into the data.  My father and father-in-law both were first generation immigrants from Northern Europe, worked in construction/welding industry, drank in moderation, raised 4 kids each but my dad died of kidney failure and father in law had cancer of the brain. They BOTH had at least 3 cups of coffee a day. At family reunions we all love our coffee and run the same gamete of diseases as any cross section of America, from AIDS to Legionnaire's Disease. to just plain old age. .

one has to wonder who profits from these lies. That what PR people do, they go in the back door and get free advertising by printing such nonsense making the weak minded and gullible think its true merely because it is in print.

I was a 2 cup a day coffee drinker who was diagnosed with BPH 3 years ago. I took an Avodart and two Flomax capsules a day (the name brand Flomax - generic didn't work for me) while continuing to drink coffee. Then I theorized that coffee may have been responsible for my symptoms and switched to tea. Within a month my urination problems were gone and my doctor declared my prostate normal. I urge every male coffee drinker with prostate issues to cut coffee out of their diets. I for one will NEVER drink coffee again.

The overconsumption of caffeine is a leading cause of the increased incidence of heart arrythmia in America, and I speak from experience.  I was having  the devil of a time with it until I quit all forms of caffeine on a doctor's advice.  Speaking of which, when was the last time your doctor said, "You aren't getting enough caffeine in your diet"?

COFFEE or CAFFEINE is bad for the nerves--people then need a tranquilizer. It's bad for sleep--they then need a sleeping pill. It's not allowed in Coronary care Units--it triggers PVC's and lowers the threshold for V Fib (fatal).  It causes breast lumps--Fibrocystic Disease which is also a risk factor for cancer. The New England Journal of Medicine reports a strong association with pancreatic cancer. It causes genetic deformities of cleft palate and hare lip. Pavlov called coffee "Bad Habit Glue" because it creates a need for alcohol or nicotine to tone down our nerves.

Caffeine turns stomach acid on big-time and weakens the lower esophageal sphincter causing reflux (GERD) --the pharmaceutical companies LOVE caffeine. And they put it with Tylenol to relieve the headache of caffeine withdrawal (and maintain your addiction).

Caffeine is in many headache formulas but people need to get through the withdrawal and not go back to the addiction. The FDA classifies caffeine as GRAS---"Generally Recognized As Safe" when it is a HUGE LIE. When something like exercise is good for you--it has many physiologic benefits. Caffeine is the opposite and you can break the addiction is about five days. Take a Friday "Sick Day" to start and you can be over the hump by Monday.

Is there any research on peoples' ability to tell the difference between correlation and causation?

nicmart

Genetic testing shows that I am a "slow metabolizer" of coffee. One study shows increased risk of heart attach for people with this trait. Until we know much more about individual genetics, broad nutritional recommendations, and even medical ones, are as good as useless. For some reason government is in the business of issuing guidelines for salt ingesting. The guidelines have just changed significantly. But some people have salt-sensitive hypersensitivity, most are not affected, and some people apparently have higher blood pressure when they restrict salt. No test establishes which of those each of us is, so the guidelines are pointless.

@KathyKautzman Kathy you are badly misinformed, acids caused the problems with your relatives and coffee is acidic. Learn to to treat and heal your body and stop being a sheep going to slaughter by the current medical crime cartel. How can you say what you said about coffee being a benefit in the same breath you say how your family members died. Cancer is an acid created disease, coffee is an acid. Duh don't you get it?

I'm usually one of the first to discard an article because of that problem. But in this case, I think a lot of coffee drinkers would say that it definitely makes them happier and less depressed, so this study's conclusion just seems like stating the obvious. For me, it's a pretty drastic improvement in my mood, which is one of the main reasons I drink it.
