And The Top 10 Cities For Pizza Are…

TripAdvisor says San Diego, Calif., is No. 1, but fierce debate ensues.

The best pizza city in the U.S. is none other than San Diego, Calif.

Wait, what?

TripAdvisor on Wednesday released its list of the top 10 American cities for pizza, based on reviews of its traveling customers. But the list, led not by powerhouse metropolis New York or Chicago but by midsize San Diego, immediately stoked fierce debate, and in some quarters even ridicule.

(MORE: Slices of History: Great Moments in Pizza Innovation)

According to TripAdvisor, San Diego is followed by Las Vegas and Boston, with New York in fourth place, and Chicago — home of the deep dish — not even in the picture.

The online magazine Slate declared, “TripAdvisor loses its mind,” and the blog Eater said the list was “just nonsense.”

TripAdvisor said the top spots were determined by the highest average rating, by city, for all restaurants that serve pizza. It did not take into account any other factors.

It wasn’t all bad news for fourth-place New York. Reviewers often held up the city as the standard for comparison. One San Diego reviewer mentioned that the pizza was “as good as being home in New York” while another Las Vegas commenter mentioned pizza there was just as good as “Brooklyn pizza.”

(MORE: Italy Faces a Shortage of Pizza Makers)

Other cities that made the list include Seattle, Wash., Austin, Tex., San Francisco, Calif., Indianapolis, Ind., and Philadelphia, Pa.

“TripAdvisor travelers reveal that some of America’s best pizza is being tossed on the West Coast, which flies in the face of the common perception that pizza is only a Northeast or Midwest specialty,” TripAdvisor spokesperson Brooke Ferencsik said.

The top 10 cities for pizza, as determined by TripAdvisor:

  1. San Diego, California
  2. Las Vegas, Nevada
  3. Boston, Massachusetts
  4. New York City, New York
  5. Seattle, Washington
  6. Austin, Texas
  7. San Francisco, California
  8. Indianapolis, Indiana
  9. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
  10. Phoenix, Arizona

Either the Trip Advisor people were high or they were paid off by the San Diego tourist bureau.  Chicago not only has the best pizza in the country, we also have about 20 different kinds of pizza.  Top that Orange County.http://www.chicagomag.com/Chicago-Magazine/July-2010/Photos-Best-Pizzas-in-Chicago/

Spacca Napoli is recognized nationally for it's Northern Italian masterpieces of pizza.  Does San Diego have truffle oil from France drizzles on champignon and exotic cheese pizza?  Don't think so.  So Trip Advisor postings must be suburban strip mall visitors who don't really know fine food.  Kim Amer Chicago (big surprise, right?)

I think they confused what they were judging. Pizza not the Climate. The only reason Chicago is not on the list  is because of the kickback payment they received. Man diego pizza is as tasteless as the san diego chargers song and ex- mayor.

Are you kidding me NY number 4  who the hell compiles this? I live in Austin the Pizza here SUCKS in plain English. You might stumble across a few Pizza shops who are Ny transplants and are very good. But WAY OFF. You go anywhere in NY the pizza is great some better than others. But over all very good.  California # 1 were talking Pizza not fish Tacos. Vegas.. Not to bad but No where near NY. Wheres Chicago? They make great pizza also and New Jersy too.  Trip advisor doesnt know JACK SH*T

i live in San Diego and I disagree. Bronx Pizza is legit as well as Domenic de Luca's and Lefty's. but i'm not sure, i haven't been overly impressed outside of those three. i lived in DC for 13 years and i would argue DC had better pizza overall.

Old Forge, PA - No.1 - no doubt.  Go there - walk Main Street and eat your way through The True Pizza Capital of The World, slice by slice.  You will not be sorry... just heavier and happier.

Well, let's be honest.  If i want great deep dish pizza, Chicago you're it.  If I want NY style, NY here I come.  And if I want gourmet pizza with arugala and white sauce San Diego you're my choice.  It's all about preference.  I live in Texas now the state where Good pizza = More cheese.  Chains abound.  Texas is the WORST.  I miss my Massachusetts "bar pizzas"....Lynwood where are you when I need you!

@erica ho, You're fired... I understand this is based on opinion, but this list is terrible,  where is Chicago?  Where is New Haven?  NYC should be higher on list along with Austin.

Time should be ashamed to have published this article.  Erica Ho should stick to her tumblr account

Whoever these travelers are - they have no taste buds when it comes to pizza. I've lived in Chicago and adjacent suburbs all my life and eaten my share of pizza here and other parts of the country. I've seen national chain pizza restaurants go out of business here because there are so many good local pizza chains as well as mom and pop pizzerias. Chicago style pizza roots came from the many Italians that ended up here and evolved into the  pizza we are known for. I've had pizza in Italy - it is quite different and good. Pizza in Chicago is better, of course.

Why are all the cities in the states?  Worst list ever.

The pizza here in the Seattle area is garbage. It's too hipster and organic. It is not what pizza should ever be. Detroit and/or Chicago deserve to be on this list.

Phoenix makes this list?! Really?! I'm from Chicago, but live in Phoenix now. Trust me, there is nothing but terrible chain pizza places here. I get home sick for Chicago pizza. Can't wait for your next list Trip Advisor.

Um, why isn"t Chicago on the list? Look I was born and raised in Chicago and moved to California a few years ago. The pizza (or food in general) doesn't compare. I mean, in Chicago, there are many pizza places and even the cheap ones are amazing. But that's not the case in California at all. Even my Californian friends would say the same. I'm sorry, Californian pizza can't compare to Chicago.

This TripAdvisor site is useless, and reporter Erica Ho has probably not tried Chicago pie. San Diego, c'mon, give me a break or better yet, give me a slice of that delicious Chicago pizza!!

Where is Chicago? Chicago's pizza is world famous. This makes me think that TripAdvisor is really, really stupid.

As a New York native who lives very happily in San Diego, I have several comments.  First, this poll is absolutely ridiculous.  San Diego has horrible pizza, especially Basic Pizza which is some of the worst, overpriced pizza ever known to man.  With that said, don't be haters of San Diego and San Diego cuisine.  New Yorkers who live in San Diego live there because we are smart enough to recognize that it is a great city to live in, much more so than that rat hole that NY continues to be.  I am so tired of New Yorkers who have never been anywhere outside of NY who continue with the ridiculous notion that NY is the only place where there is anything good.  Please, grow up and take a trip somewhere.  As for cuisine in San Diego, there are many great restaurants in San Diego that rival any of the overpriced restaurants in NY.  Again, we live in San Diego because we can.  But pizza is not its strong suit.

Not even close.  I live in San Diego and there is no "good" pizza here.  There is some pizza that tastes ok but there is nothing that can compare to places in New York.  Now, if this was a "Best Mexican Food" poll, I would say they hit the nail on the head with their choice of San Diego.

New York pizza and California sushi rolls don't exsist; they are oxymorons... As an Italian I am mostly disgusted with Italian food in this country; most people calling themselves Italians drown all their food in buckets of tomatoes and tons of cheese.... Only younger chefs are finally discovering and bringing pizza to the US. Stay away from anyone who's recipe comes from their grandmother and not from solid pizza making background

my brother and his wife live in San Diego. Whenever they visit me here in New Jersey, they always complain that the pizza is not good enough. I don't understand this at all.

San Diego's Department of Tourism must paid a butt load of money for this crap to be published. Tract housing and gas chugging SUV s are popular, but that doesn't mean they're good.

Chicago and New York have the best pizza...END of STORY.

I moved from New York City to California more than 20 years ago.  I can say with complete confidence that it's IMPOSSIBLE to get good pizza here.  I've read rave reviews of several pizza stores here, and then tried them.  One is worse than the other and not one is nearly as good as a neighborhood pizzeria in NYC.

The best I've had would not be considered better than 3rd rate in NYC.  I don't understand why this is the case and I wish it wasn't so.  After all, pizza is not the most complicated thing in the world to make.

Seriously? An article about another article? Fine investigative journalism, that. I imagine the author learned this in school, writing about the other students' papers.

i am basically bored of these top ten news ...  basically scam articles for getting ad money.

When top fitness city comes ... san francisco comes .. when eating pizza comes san francisco .. I mean arent these the list of cities that appear in top ten of everything .. top 10 cities with most chinese .. number 1 san francisco .. what else do we want .. stop these top 10 or top 20 articles .. there is no use of these other than satisfying self.

These "best of" lists are ridiculous.  Whoever came up with this list has not sampled every pizza parlor in the USA.  Eating pizza has to do with personal preference.  One can't say a particular place makes better pizza than another.  Of course, you can get a bad pizza anywhere too.

Get real.  My son lived in San Diego for one year.  He couldn't wait to come home to NYC pizza.  Best way to decide:  blind taste test.  Great idea.  A convention of great pizza restaurants from all over the country.  Let me know where.  My next vacation.

@Johncut yeah, San Diego is amazing. i love it hear. i found my NY style pizza (Bronx Pizza), my Chicago style (Lefty's), and Italian style (De Luca's), so i'm just fine. Urbn and Hillcrest Brewery have good coal fire pizza. i still disagree SD has the best pizza in the US, that makes no sense, but SD has AMAZING food as a whole and do have some solid pizza spots.

JamesMichaelMillette

Colony pizza is BOMB!

...ALSO... in downtown SD the most popular pizza place/bar uses a recipe from a new haven, ct pizza place. The only notable food here in california is made following east coast resipes! Lol ...or its mexican.

@timstrong611 Bronx Pizza (NY) and Lefty's (Chicago) are really good. Bronx is in Hillcrest and Lefty's is in North Park.

With all due respect, even if the pizza in NY is not authentic "Italian" cuisine in your opinion is not reason to suggest that it needs to change. NYers happen to love it just the way it is. You can train as many chef's as you like, open as many "Authentic" pizzeria's as well. We will always choose our delicious"American" style pizza.

AshleyBarnes

@j45ashton @stinky - You're right.  And BTW, Chicago Deep Dish was a marketing ploy to get tourist dollars by the first restaurant that started it.  Although Chicagoans now eat it, most of us still prefer the real Chicago style.  Flat, crispy crust, cheese slightly browned over toppings with taste, and dimension.  For real Chicago pizza you have to try Father and Son pizza or Ria's pizza.  Actually in St. Pal, Minnesota there is a pizza place called Red's Savoy Inn that serves a pretty good real Chicago pizza.
