Nick Selby loves his school, and he let incoming freshmen know during an animated and escalating two-minute welcome speech on Monday accompanied by theme music from “2001: A Space Odyssey.” Selby opened by reciting words of Sir Isaac Newton, “If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants,” and built up his audience like Friday Night Lights’ Coach Eric Taylor to his team before the big game. “Congratulations on your acceptance,” Selby said following a dramatic pause, “and brace yourselves for a hell of a ride on your way to becoming a hell of an engineer.” The stunned-looking freshmen — donning the school’s mascot Yellow Jackets — applauded their orator for his over-the-top theatrics.
