Formed in 1989 by lead singer Courtney Love and guitarist Eric Erlandson, the alt-rock group Hole gained fame throughout the grunge rock era—thanks in part to Love’s marriage to Kurt Cobain. The group’s demise began in 2000, when member Melissa Auf der Maur left to join the Smashing Pumpkins and Hole parted ways with its label. By 2002, the group had begun pursuing solo albums and various side projects, leading to its eventual end. Hole briefly reunited in 2010, beginning with a performance on BBC’s Friday Night with Jonathan Ross. Two years later, following a screening of drummer Patty Schemel’s documentary, Hit So Hard, Love, Erlandson, Auf der Maur and Schemel performed together for the first time in 15 years, leading fans to dream of a reunion tour. But a few months later, Love crushed that dream by tweeting, “Hole is dead.”
