Bikers ride past the US Capitol Building on September 11, 2013 in Washington, DC.

A group called the 2 Million Bikers to DC is leading a parade of motorcycles through the nation’s capital today to commemorate 9/11 victims and military veterans. “We’re here for 9-11,” the national ride coordinator Belinda Bee told the Washington Times. Since Tuesday, riders from around the country have been tweeting photos of their journey to Washington (hashtag #2MBikers), with early pictures and videos showing thousands of bikes overflowing out of rest stops and parking lots on their way to the event. A Facebook page devoted to the ride is also being updated with highlights.

If this sounds like the type of event that would never receive approval from the city, you’d be correct. U.S. News reports that the group initially asked for a permit to demonstrate around the National Mall. However, the National Park Service denied the request, saying that such a large gathering of motorcycles would cause “a severe disruption of traffic” and more police than D.C. could provide. However, according to  D.C. law, “it shall not be an offense to assemble or parade on a District street, sidewalk, or other public way, or in a District park, without having provided notice or obtained an approved assembly plan.” So the event is happening — legally — without the permit.

A second, more controversial purpose of the ride is to protest a permit issued to another group — the American Muslim Political Action Committee — to rally on the National Mall today to protest public backlash against Muslims since the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Called the Million American March Against Fear, it’s being billed as: “A Historic Event for Solidarity of Humanity to Establish Peace, harmony and Justice through a Civil Rights Movement.”

The bikers aren’t planning to confront the Muslim group, however. “We are going to have a peaceful ride,” Bee told the Times.

So now 2 Million Bikers to DC is claiming you had 90,000 bikes there instead of the 1.2 million bikes they had originally bandied around. You only had that small space on the side and behind your building. And the road from Taylor Acres Ave to Livingston Rd., according to Google Maps, is a distance of 0.4 miles or 2112 feet. I have been to your dealer many times during Rolling Thunder. So I am very familiar with you location and facilities. I like your Dealership. 10,000 bikes would be a huge number to squeeze in that space even if the parking lots across the street were available to use on a business day. You stated that you would be releasing 50 bikes at a time. You did not say what the time interval between bike releases would be, so I'll be generous and give you 30 seconds. That equates to 100 bikes/per minute. NBC Washington Channel 4 had a news reporter and cameraman at the intersection of Livingston Road and Indian Head Hwy. The reporter, who was there the whole time, stated that it only took 50 minutes to clear all the bikes onto Indian Head Hwy. So 50 minutes times 100 bikes is 5000 bikes. Not 90,000 bikes. And certainly not 870,000 or 1.2 million. So why do people feel the need to wildly exaggerate the numbers? 5000 bikes on short notice is a decent turnout. But I'll double the number and say 10,000 bikes. Now that is a stretch. Estimating crowds is an imperfect art and always subject to challenge. But I am trying to be honest. The DC Police and the Park Service stopped estimating crowd size in 1995 after the debate over the size of The One Million Man March. And no, you cannot count riders.

Count me in for next year if this becomes an annual event. Very proud of the bikers that were able to participate in the event.

I am a biker. But I have an honor code. And that is to tell the truth. There were only about 5000 bikers there. Anyone that tells you anything over 20,000 is misleading, lying or both. I have been to Ft. Washington Harley where this pic was made dozens of times. It is impossible to get a million bikes in this tiny stretch of road. Go watch the video at NBC Washington (channel 4) who covered this event. Ft Washington Harley states that they let groups of 50 leave at a time to create space and to try to avoid bikes bunching up at lights and causing an unsafe situation for bikers. They did not state how often they released each group of 50, so I'll be generous and say every 30 seconds. So every minute 100 bikes were released to join the pack. NBS Washington is there with cameras. They said it took 50 minutes for ALL the bikes to depart, So 50 x 100 equals 5000. So your 1.2 million guesstimate is a pipe dream. Where are the other 1,195,000 bikers? You would need 10-11 days for 1.2 million bikes to parade through DC even if you had gotten a permit to turn all traffic lights green for your little self-centered, look-at-me ride to intimidate men, women and children of a faith different than yours. Next year, please name your ride for what it is. The Hate Ride. Or the New Westboro Church ride to instill fear.

I'm a biker, a veteran of the Viet Nam era honorably discharged and nearing 67 years old. All I want to say is I learned all I need to know and want to know about muslims from 9/11 and of their 5000 miserable year history on earth and through my life experiences. Don't need or want any misguided liberals veiw points on the matter either. I believe I've paid my dues and earned my right to my own opinion.... period. They are a plauge and have contributed nothing much to civilized humanity. My desire is that we can keep them from attacking us again and that they stay in their own homelands and continue to just kill eachother which they seem to be very preoccupied with doing and we have the good sense to just stay out of it all and watch from the sidelines. To me that would be peace and satisfaction rolled into one. Shame on the media and our own government and the liberals driving both agendas. Those bikers in DC had a real statement to make and should not have been infringed upon the way they were. The media is in bed with enemy and that should be very clear to everyone by now.

this isn't news, except for the fact that a bunch of rednecks got together with nazi helmets and loud obnoxious motorcycles.  what a waste of fuel, time and space.  i guess they still come out of the woodwork in the banjo states...we still have a lot of work to do.

I know there are Countries where the Government CONTROLS what the media is allowed to release to the public.  I never thought I would live to see the same thing in the USA.  I was very interested in the 2 million bikers heading to D.C.  I watched every network and only FOX showed a small clip.  Why?  Regardless, if you supported what these Americans did.....or not.......it is still news!  There was a time when reporters reported NEWS and NOT Opinions!  Not no more!
I did find a lot all over the internet. Not long before the Government blocks internet news!

Really Time???  You can do a better job covering these so called "patriots", As usual you cannot believe the right wing hype.

They were planning on using tractor-trailers to block the roads into and out of the city. The trailers would also serve as temporary jail facilities in which to hold members of Congress and other officials who didn't comply with their demands. They were not going to be armed themselves, but planned to have an armed citizen's militia waiting in the wings in Virginia to come and save them if authorities in DC became violent. Some of the planners envisioned this as a multi-day event.

This was the gathering that was so nuts that even angry wingnut lunatic Police Chief Mark Kessler of Gilberton, PA distanced himself from it.

@ScottyBoatright I was there. There were most differently move than 20,000 at the Harley Davidson dealership alone.  I are going to call me a liar?   So obviously you do not know what you are talking about.  Climb back under your rock and go back to sleep.

@KenHoyesen

Obama's favorite brother from Kenya, who was best man at his and Michele's wedding,  is  a high Mucky-muck in the Muslim Brotherhood.

This brother filters money to himself and his many wives through so-called charitable foundations with the Obama name on them (from here in America).

Google it.

Educate yourselves.

@Kaddi

Maybe it's changing, Kaddi.

For the first time ever I saw a paper in the grocery with a story of Obama being gay and associating with terrorists on their front page.  They named names and gave places.  You can't do that if it isn't true.  It would be libel.  Obama's brother (Best Man at his and Michele's wedding in 1993)  is a Big Muslim Brotherhood Official.

Amazon even sells a book by a man who says he was Obama's lover.   Pure Evil.

Check it out.

@Lightangel1960 I don't know where you think you got your information from, but before you decide to just regurgitate someone else and their lies, may you should get your facts straight. Your "link" is not a reliable source, maybe instead you should go to the 2 million bikers to D.C. webpage before you attempt to discredit Patriots again. In fact many of those who went served in the military to protect you so you could further spit in their faces. There was NEVER any mention of arming themselves or being violent. Simply because you can post ignorance, doesn't mean you should!

@ScottyBoatright What the heck is wrong with you? You are telling this man that HIS OWN PERSONAL OPINION is WRONG because he is old???? or as you say, wrong -  headed?? The hell? an opinion is an opinion, right or wrong.. Its AN OPINION. This man is a veteran.. You just seem to be some biker that has no idea what the hell you are talking about! have you ever been in the military or army or air force or ANYTHING? You are basing your opinion on the media and in your other statement, you are trying to say that 2 million bikers did not go to DC because of your little math equation there? I mean come on! How dare you tell someone that there opinion is wrong! I bet you dont even know this man, dont know a damn thing he knows, and you sure dont think like him. So you can not say he is wrong! I mean, he could turn around and say you are wrong on your other little rant because that is not what he thinks and that is not how he views things. So what would you say to that? You sure wouldnt believe him because you think you know everything with your little closed mind! like I said, you dont know what he knows so just go back under your damn rock where you came from! People like you make me sick! I dont know a thing about this except that there are a bunch of bikers in DC but I sure as hell am not gonna go around saying "just because your old dosnt make your opinion right, your wrong headed, god bless you" THAT right there is just WRONG! and messed up to say to a man that fought for YOUR freedom in this country!

And then there is Obama's own autobiography. "Dreams from My Father".   He tells how he dealt and did drugs "for years" (his own words).    Don't they put people in prison for that?

Well, Scotty, that and  $2.00 will  get you a cup of coffee!!

The guy that shot up the Navy Yard in D.C. was a veteran also.

But then, I really doubt that you ever saw a military uniform, much less ever wore one legally.

@aztecian @RandalMorgan As someone who was born in the Bay Area in California, but raised equal parts of my youth in Arkansas, I must say that I would choose Arkansas over California in a heartbeat. Not only is Arkansas less polluted, but the people there are so much nicer in "flyover country" than they are in the rude hustle-and-bustle capitols of "culture". I submit aztecian as exhibit A.

@aztecian @RandalMorgan As a Brit I have to say Aztecian that even from the outside you come across as a racist and biased individual if you can label a whole area and group of people in America as Rednecks and deficient in culture because of their geography and racial origins, such racist and bigoted speech is quite shocking,  I imagine you said the same thing about large groups of blacks protesting about their civil rights (or do you only hate one group)
