Tumblr of the Week: Men Taking Up Too Much Space on the Train

An examination of the myriad ways guys splay their legs on subway trains, seemingly oblivious to other riders desperate for a seat

If you’re a frequent rider of public transportation, you’ve likely got a long and carefully detailed list of pet peeves and grievances. (See NewsFeed’s own list of punishable subway behaviors here.) Now, some of these pet peeves may be pretty specialized, but chances are we can all agree on at least one general principle: people need to stop taking up so much space. Or, more specifically, men need to stop taking up so much space, according to a new Tumblr that documents this problematic phenomenon.

Men Taking Up Too Much Space On The Train” collects photographs of what the site’s curator deems “a classic among public assertions of privilege.” As the Huffington Post points out, “the men photographed in this Tumblr aren’t doing anything malicious, but it’s an interesting visual representation of the way that men feel totally empowered to take up a lot of public space — and women often do not.”

Commentary about male privilege and gender roles in society aside, the Tumblr is mostly just a funny way to do a little public shaming. Like this guy: do you really need that much space, sir? Probably not.

I've seen the blog and it's ridiculous.  Most of the pictures feature men sitting with their legs apart on bench-style seats that are otherwise empty or placing a bag on an unoccupied seat in a train that looks half empty--my God, what horrors will the patriarchy think of next?   There's barely any need to mock this sort of gender politics as it parodies itself.

SO it isn't just me.  As a woman I cannot take it anymore when men feel they have the right to use half of my seat on buses, trains and airplanes. Even when they are shorter than me, they act like they need more leg space.  Meanwhile I'm contorted into a ball up against the wall/window or falling off my seat. It goes so far as to give me SEVERE HEADACHES from the contorting on longer trips. It's so freaking disrespectful and IT IS a blatant product of male entitlement. Those on here who don't get it aren't women and on crowded public transportation.  If you were you would feel the same way and be able to recognize the obvious gender discrimination that cause it. If you think that it's a silly then you are stupid and ignorant and oblivious to the conditions girls/women live under.

Men kicking their feet up in a subway car = systematic oppression

I'm dying of laughter. Please, somebody tell me why I need to be more sensitive and check my privilege. I haven't laughed this hard in ages.

Looks pretty empty to me...

This is more an attack on White males as it is a commentary on public transportation etiquette. It is highly unlikely that anyone

would get away with taking up too much space on a crowded subway.  The picture above was either staged or the subway

car was empty.

@gnosis1123 I was disappointed by some of the pics cause some just show rude behaviour.  But this is a real issue if you ACTUALLY LOOK at the pics you will see ones where men are intruding on the space of women and FORCING the women to contort or be squished.  It's disrespectful, hateful, and common place.

@d_jDang Looks like a photoshoot.  Clearly a fine example of the situation this tumblr is focusing on.

@d_jDang IS that a reference to the morals/character/brains of he photo's subject?

@liberty427 MEN intrude on space EVERY TIME I get on a bus or plane.  Young guys have actually used me as something to LEAN ON when the bus has been less crowded...elbowing me and pushing against me while talking to the boys.

It's pure selfishness, arrogance and obvious hatred to girls/women to be honest.  They and you might think that's harsh but ask yourself why they think it's OK to do that specifically to women/girls?  Cause our space is theirs to take and we are expected to clear way.  How we feel doesn't matter cause we are just in their way.  They don't treat other men that way.

I have had too many really disturbing incidences of this type of entitlement.

@liberty427 It doesn't matter how full/empty that car was.  That's not the point.  The point, yet again, is a seemingly complete lack of common sense in so very many men.

That has nothing to do with skin color - it's simply about the male brain, no matter what the skin color, height, weight, or any other physical feature of said man.

This is not an attack on white men.  This is reality, and it's seen every day, in every city on this planet that has public transportation.  And it's NOT confined to subways, either.  You seem to have no idea how often this same attitude is shown on buses and every other means of conveyance.

Next time you use any method of public conveyance, OPEN YOUR EYES AND YOUR MIND!!!

@liberty427 Um, no. I ride the NYC subways every day and I can assure you that this stuff happens every single day on every single subway car, and yes, in crowded cars. In fact, I have photos I took myself of people (and yep, always men, although not always white) using the seat next to them as a luggage rack on a rush hour train. The photo you refer to is actually a very mild example.
