Maybe they're trying a little too hard to be clever

We thought we had seen it all when Oreo introduced a candy corn flavor last year for Halloween and a two-toned watermelon variety this past summer. Now ultimate cookie monsters can sink their teeth into the new cookies n’ creme flavor. That’s right, Oreos stuffed with cookies and cream-flavored filling.

This week, photos of the item started appearing on websites like the Impulsive Buy and ConsumeristThe New York news site Gothamist joked that the treat represents a “cookie identity crisis.” A spokesperson for Oreo’s parent company, Mondelez International, tells TIME that the limited-edition snack was released Sept. 1 and only cost 99 cents at Walgreen’s stores if you have a club card.

So NewsFeed got a couple of packs at a Duane Reade in Rockefeller Center — after striking out at two other nearby locations — and passed around the cookies in the newsroom. Some staffers think the new flavor tastes like a regular Oreo, while others think it’s tastier and creamier, like a cookie that had just been dunked in milk. In fact, at first glance, the black-speckled creme looks like an Oreo that got dropped, crumbled, or maybe just spent a little too much time at the bottom of a backpack.

Or what if, given the shocking revelation that Double Stuf Oreos don’t actually contain twice as much stuf as normal Oreos — they only have 1.86 times as much, to be exact — the company is trying to overcompensate by mixing more cookie crumbs in the middle to make up for the lack of stuf. Regardless, for those who like to engage in heated debates about which part of the Oreo is better, the cookie or the creme, cookies n’ creme seems to satisfy both perspectives.

And before you know it, ice cream stores could be advertising cookies n’ creme ice cream with pieces of cookies ‘n’ creme Oreos. That would be even more confusing.
