One woman is hungry for an engagement ring, and she hopes to get it by making her boyfriend 300 sandwiches.

Stephanie Smith, senior reporter for the New York Post‘s gossip section Page Six, embarked on this mission after she made her computer programmer boyfriend, Eric Schulte, a simple turkey sandwich with lettuce, Swiss cheese, and Dijon mustard on wheat bread. He called it the best sandwich ever, and said, “You’re, like, 300 sandwiches away from an engagement ring.”

“Maybe I needed to show him I could cook to prove that I am wife material,” she writes in an article in Wednesday’s New York Post.  “If he wanted 300 sandwiches, I’d give him 300 sandwiches — and I’d blog about it.” After all, their relationship has always been rooted in a love for food, from dining at New York’s hottest restaurants to cooking extravagant meals at their home in Brooklyn.

So since last June, she has been blogging about each one she makes on her Tumblr “300 Sandwiches.” They all have cheesy names and back stories, from Sandwich #120, “‘Miles of Love’ Chicken Parmesan Sandwich,” inspired by the breakfast Schulte made for her after she ran a half marathon, to Sandwich #167, “‘Together Before the Madness Begins’ Steak and Tomato Pita Sandwich,” a hearty one she concocted before she started covering New York Fashion Week to make up for coming home late every night for the next eight days.

Some of Smith’s friends have called the whole concept chauvinistic and something straight out of The Stepford Wives. But she says the two actually do a lot of meal prep together — and household chores in general. In fact, her 172nd sandwich “‘Messy House’ Ham and Cheese on a Roll,” was inspired by a day when their apartment looked like a pigsty. She went out to buy Serrano ham and some cheese, and when she came back, he had cleaned the whole place.
