“Wild” Willie Seeley became and overnight sensation after sharing in last month’s $450 Million-dollar jackpot. But now Willie is miserable, as are other past winners. Watch here to see why.
I wouldn't have his problem, I don't talk to most of my family now so I wouldn't talk to them after I won. I wouldn't go nuts either buying mansions, yachts or expensive sports cars. I'd pay off my bills and buy a new truck, then I'd donate to some charities and live off the interest. I can't believe the stupid things some of these lottery winners do.
I won't have a problems of too many friends. I don't have ANY, only my daughters and their family. Of course, they could become a "curse" if I ever win the POWERBALL. Since I don't play it, I can't win it.
Frankly, If I ever won the lottery I wouldn't have a whole bunch of harassment from anybody and everybody. There would just be a lot of people asking what ever happened to that one guy who won the lottery? Uncle Sam would get his cut and then I would be on to my life as an ex-pat.
I have 4 personal friends that have as much money as a powerball winner, one from making a famous horror movie a few years back that you've heard of, one from a massive kitchen cabinet company that sells in Home Depot, another that owns the most recognized sprinkler head manufacture and the other that have a very successful construction company. Let me tell you, they are all very happy. There are two types of people, those like me who have no ethical issue with having lots of money and people who think having lots of money is bad. People with money only keep friends that treat them like they are not wealthy. I am at the poverty line but I would never ruin my relationship with any friend by asking for money or expecting anything from them. Let me tell you, I could spend the rest of my life in 5 star hotels with personal assistants and not have a problem, I've done it and it's much better than where I am now always chasing a few dollars to keep the lights.
This is why states couldn't require their winners to have to appear before photo ops. In Illinois they say they want to prove that there are winners. Of course there are winners. But those winners paid a buck or better to participate. It seems to me that if a person or persons want to have their winnings put in a trust fund or another name they should be allowed to do so without the world looking over their shoulders. And after all one winner maybe two, was killed because of it. Or harassed. If they want to use a name, then the winner should have the option of using just their first or last name and maybe an initial. That public part of winning should be abolished.
Hmm... Interesting. I have always thought after you buy that nice home, a nice car and set up your future the greatest fun would be giving it away and seeing the pleasure, the happiness you could bring to other peoples lives.
Seriously!!! Willie may have been a lottery winner, but still clearly a loser!! Complaining about phone calls!! Change your number, moron! If you're so ungrateful and miserable for having won, why did you participate in buying a ticket to begin with. People like you don't deserve to win. There is a lot of good that could be done with the money you've won, and a lot of real winners who be grateful and put the money to good use. So give it to charity & shut up, if you would rather go back to your meager paycheck-to-paycheck existence.
There was a guy here in Canada who hit it big, he set aside a certain amount and gave all those long lost relatives and friends $1000 each. You don't want it, don't take it, but that was it. A guy wanted him to loan him something outrageous for a business venture, he told him to draft a proposal, figure out what percentage he would get etc. They guy was furious and went away empty handed. I'd do the same, everyone I know on facebook could claim $1000, but that would be it. Unlisted number, unlisted address.
Before purchasing the ticket, make a contingency plan for winning a large amount of money. Determine what you would want to do with the money and research methods to implement it beginning with seeking advise from competent legal, financial, and security professionals. Practice saying "NO" to anyone offering you something outside of the parameters that you have set for yourself.
I agree with the last words..."just disappear while you still can", but I'd like to add something to that, change your last name first, then move to another state, sever all contact with friends and family except maybe your mom and dad after you've given them some "hush money" and even then don't tell them your new location and give them a phone number to a prepaid cell number with no registered name. It would be quite easy to start over after a mega jackpot win if you really wanted the privacy and peace. There was one recent elderly person that won a big jackpot and claimed it thru an LLC using an attorney firm for the sake of having privacy. The first major spending I'd do would be consult the top alternative energy inventors of the world to be able to go completely off-grid and have all the power I needed without paying the electric company. Secondly , I'd have a custom 40 foot motor home with a multi-fuel diesel / bio-diesel engine with multiple power generators installed into it and hit the road traveling the western state national parks. I would be a hard man to track down. Never have wished for living in a mansion or owning a fleet of exotic sports cars or been into the party scene. I've always been more into the reclusive hideaway , living deep in the mountains , outdoors-nature man type.1 million clear could probably accomplish everything I wanted to do but 2 million clear would absolutely accomplish everything I wanted to do.
@KennithEPerry I wouldn't have this problem either, because I would be gone. Nobody would find me.
@gpx21dlr I have thought of at least 4 legitimate ways to win lotteries without personally buying a ticket. If you took longer than it took to type your comment to actually think about it, I'm sure you could think of some as well.
@FreeBusinessMix The thing is, they earned their money. If you suddenly have money dropped on you, most people can't handle it. The mix of all the new "friends" and the illusion that you'll be able to live the rest of your life like a king destroys them.
The problem with that is if you start doing that everyone is going to expect you to support them for the rest of their lives.
@CountrySquiress awful advice..........never plan on winning the lottery. It's a novelty and should be treated as such. As soon as you start thinking winning is possible you stop realizing how much youre wasting. Play it like youre going to lose..... if you win then you can plan for it before you make it public/turn in your ticket.
and don't play if you cant afford to play.... when you start justifying skipping credit card payments because "there's millions coming your way"... you need help
@JohnMccall You sound like a guy after my own heart. I agree totally. But still, I say folks shouldn't be required to paste their face and name all over the place. You can do a lot more anonymous and be more inclined to do so if you didn't have an audience.
@JohnMccall I like your post. took the words right out of my mouth.
Really, if you won 400 million do you really think you'll spend it all? even if you gave your sisters/brothers/mother/aunt/uncles 1 million each to shut them up you'd still be set for life.
If it was me the first thing i would do is start a family "business". Not a buisness in terms of a way to make money but in terms of "if you want some money... come work for me I'll put you on salary".This "buisness" would also be something the community would benefit from and that would IMO cover the community give back.
I'd offer a modest salary,a few percent higher than their current salary, then if my friends/family are not willing to work for their salary it's their fault they can guilt themselves for not taking the chance.
@JohnMccall Wait, so you're fully admitting that money is more important to you than your entire family? That's... sad.
@thebobman so your saying that family who just wants to take advantage of you wouldn't understand if you didn't spread the winnings?
But really all you need to do is move to a location where that kind of money isn't that special. There are a lot of B list celebrities who move into small towns and no one bothers them or even knows they are there.
