Bye bye little guy

It was the best of TIME, it was the worst of TIME

When the government shutdown commenced Oct. 1, a moratorium on federal jobs and benefits meant a sudden halt of the beloved National Zoo’s live stream panda cam. So to fill the public need for pandas — a need so great that Newt Gingrich said he’d pay out of pocket to keep the panda cam running — we at TIME decided to make our own.

For more than two weeks we laughed, we cried and we streamed, as our sassy panda donned everything from sunglasses to a zebra print cowboy hat to a birthday sign.

But with the shutdown coming to a close and the true panda cam’s reinstatement, it’s time for our little guy to eat his final bamboo stick and go into hibernation. We’ll pull the plug on our livestream at noon EST.

See you next shutdown.
